Bond 2012 | |

Early Voting is now underway and the election is less than two weeks away; ECISD officials encourage everyone to get out and vote!
On the ballot this year is a $129,750,000 school bond to build high school additions at Odessa High School and Permian High School which would allow ECISD to move to the middle school grade alignment. The bond proposal also includes three new elementary schools to relieve overcrowding in the west and north parts of the county.
This link -- http://www.ectorcountyisd.org/Page/19893 -- will take you to a list of the dates, times, and locations for early voting and for voting on November 6. |

The Best Me is Drug Free! |
Red Ribbon Week got off to a rousing start with a community rally on the front steps of the ECISD Administration Building Monday morning.
Those in attendance saw performances by the Austin Montessori choir, Odessa High School Showgirls, and the OHS Drum Line. City Councilwoman Barbara Graff read a proclamation from Mayor Larry Melton declaring this Red Ribbon Week in Odessa, the X-Out Youth Leadership Coalition sponsored by the Permian Basin Regional Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse introduced its student executives, and nationally known youth speaker Phil Chalmers told everyone he wants to help make Odessa drug-free and bully-free!
This year's theme is, "The Best Me is Drug Free" and schools across the District have planned activities to reinforce that message to our students, staff, and campus visitors.
Red Ribbon Week, October 22-26, commemorates the ultimate sacrifice of DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe. |

Building great citizens
Congratulations to Odessa High School senior Alyssa Carter who qualified for the State Citizen Bee in Austin last May. The Citizen Bee is a regional and state competition that is sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute and the Texas Bar Association. Students learn in-depth information about our nation's founding documents, important political figures throughout American history, and landmark Supreme Court cases. The competing students have a written exam as well as an oral competition held in front of an audience. Last February, Alyssa took first place in this region, Region 18, to earn a spot at the State Citizen Bee, the final round of which was held in the Texas Capitol Building.
Alyssa is pictured with Superintendent of Schools Hector Mendez and school board president Ray Beaty at the October 16 school board meeting.

| Junior VIPS rock! |
The Junior VIPS program is a great way to develop responsibility in our kids now and build an army of volunteers for the future. VIPS stands for Volunteers in Public Schools and most people associate that with parents and other adults volunteering in our schools but nine schools have Junior VIPS programs underway this year. One of the most recent additions is at Murry Fly Elementary and you can see from the photos that group of kids is hard at work on a number of campus projects! In September a total of 45 students volunteered 125 hours helping with breakfast, in classrooms, in the library, with the Junior Masters Gardeners, and the Keep Murry Fly Beautiful Club. Murry Fly teacher Peter Stevens (blue shirt, bottom right corner) is their leader. Way to go!

Do you moo? | |
Are you familiar with Moo Day? This is an annual milk promotion that asks students and their families to use their imaginations and create something spectacular out of a carton, jug, chug, or any other container that once held milk. ECISD Food Services coordinates this contest and entries come from across the District. This year's projects were especially outstanding!
The one pictured is called "Angry Jugs," a play on the popular Smartphone app Angry Birds. We posted an album of pictures on our EctorCountyISD Facebook page - visit us there and tell us which ones are your favorites!

Mayor declares Gonzales Elementary Day
On October 5 Odessa Mayor Larry Melton (pictured above) led a formal ribbon cutting ceremony at Gonzales Elementary and declared it Gonzales Elementary School Day in special recognition of its PTA. Gonzales' PTA is committed to supporting the school and the members worked for the past three years to provide an estimated $87,000 in gifts and contributions which went toward the purchase of new playground equipment. The equipment will allow smaller students and Life Skills students access to the playground fun. The Life Skills students took ownership of the design and picked all of the panels they felt they would like best. |

Gone fishin' | |
Each year the Life Skills and Basic Skills special education units from John B. Hood Junior High take a little fishing trip to northwest Odessa. The family of teacher Tonya Parrish has some land with a small pond there and the kids (and adults) are treated to a day in the sun, fishing, a cookout, and the chance to see horses, donkeys, and a pot-bellied pig! Joining the group for the first time this year were students from Communities in Schools who have been partnered with the special education students throughout the year. Nice work all around on this annual event! |
