Dear Athlete!

I was fired up this past week by the IAAF World Championships in Beijing!

Watching women and men from around the globe compete is as energizing as it is hopeful. Admittedly, a runner or a walker does not become a "fan" of athletics (what the rest of the world calls it...we call it track and field) overnight. It's an acquired taste usually started by being in a club, on a school team, or in college. Not you? Actually you are.

Each of you are a member of a vast "club" of adults who choose to work out and train at varying levels. When you see the colors of your country flash down the track, on the race walk, or marathon course, you are drawn to their excellence. You shout at the screen and rise out of your seat somehow hoping it'll improve their chances.

I know I urged on Matt Centrowitz in the 1500, watched in shock as Jenny Simpson lost her shoe in the 1500, and marveled at the determined climb to tenth place in the marathon by Serena Burla, a cancer survivor.

For me, perhaps the highlight was Ashton Eaton summoning a 63.5 second final 400 in the 1500 to break his world record in the decathlon!

The Olympics are less than a year away in Rio and there are plenty of meets on TV between now and then to get your "fan" on!

It's not too late to sign up for the Broncos Back to Football 7K on Sunday morning, September 6th. It's going to be a large turnout, so get parked early so you're able to get in your assigned corral in plenty of time!

It's not too early to sign up for the May Farms Harvest Moon 5K on Saturday evening (just as the moon rises!), September 26th. This is a perfect excuse to manage 3.1 miles and then be treated to amazing food and drink.

Check out the May Farms Series website to learn about staying there on the grounds overnight, or being shuttled back and forth from a nearby hotel. I really want this event to get some traction because if it does get your support, there's a half marathon being planned next year!

The Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon is already in full planning mode for the 11th edition on 14-15 May '16. Recently the annual selection (over 200 wonderful people applied and roughly 15% were selected!) of "Colfax Ambassadors" was completed, so you'll begin to see their smiling faces at events and at training runs throughout Colorado very soon!

Another big addition to Colfax this coming year is a unified approach to the Pace Teams. The entire marathon and half marathon pacing will be managed by Runner's Edge of the Rockies. My longtime friend and first class coach, David Manthey, will supervise this entire program along with Karen Craig. David's training group is top flight. I hope to resume joining a few of their long runs over the next several months.

Watch for updates on the Runner's Edge and Colfax websites. We plan to identify most of the pacers by the end of January, so you'll get to know who you might be teamed up with!

Many of you know we support a primary school in Kenya through the Kipture Primary School Foundation

(a 501c3 charity). I try to visit it (on my dime/ schilling!) almost every year. I plan to return next year in the last two weeks of February. It's never a five star trip, but when you visit the school there's loads of forgiveness for the less than perfect conditions. The people and country are amazing and the children will melt your heart (put picture here). Several of you have asked about going there someday. I'm not a tour operator (and don't want to be!), but I will publish the 2016 dates I'm going fairly soon. I stay in Kapsabet near where the school is located. I hope to be there for about 10 days (including the long flights) and wrap with a side trip to Maasai Mara.

Lonnie Somers and I serve on the board of the foundation and we have no paid staff or reimbursed travel. It's, quite simply, a labor of love. If you're interested, watch for details in the next E:Newsletter when we publish our Kipture website once it's completely overhauled.

Finally, search your closet and drawers for the tights, hats, and gloves you stored away last May while you enjoy the few remaining weeks of summer!
