Dear Athlete,
At 5:30AM our group ran from my house this morning and it was 41 degrees. I broke out my tights, wind jacket, and gloves. It was actually a terrific temperature and reminded me that optimal temps are between 40-50 degrees. We just have to be outfitted accordingly!
To the news:
We moved our warehouse a couple of weeks ago and I promptly got injured from lifting equipment beyond my ability! The solution? I began visiting a PT Dr. Nick Thurlow at One Eighty PT. I have bounced back from almost unable to walk without pain to running pain free. He's continuing to do more work on me, but it was surprising how fast the recovery has been!
*Harry Hall, a friend of mine in Texas, has published a very unusual and fascinating book, "The Pedestriennes, America's Forgotten Superstars" My guess is that you are like me; completely unaware of these extraordinary women of the 1800's! Here's but one vignette (taken with permission by author):
Amy Howard
"The best and most remarkable of all the pedestriennes. In December 1879, the one-time entertainer set a six-day record of 393 miles in Madison Square Garden. Won several multi-day races in San Francisco, including a six-day total of 409 miles, which stood as the American record for more than 100 years. Returned to the stage with her husband in 1882. Died during childbirth October 4, 1885. She was 23 years old."
Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon will have an expo booth at the Rock 'N Roll Denver (Colorado Convention Center)! A gift awaits you if you visit their booth and sign up for the 10th Anniversary weekend next May 16-17, 2015!
Speaking of Colfax, the official recommended training programs are being finalized and will be posted on the RunColfax.org website in the next 30 days. Three have been locked in (Jeff Galloway's, Hal Higdon's, and Richard Kalasky's. One or two more are being considered. Focusing on Hal Higdon for a moment, I have known Hal for years, but never knew that in 1968 he ran the multi-loop Washington Park Denver Marathon. That was 46 years ago. He placed 2nd in 2:35:47, a time that would still win or place in the top five in most Colorado marathons today!
A very thoughtful person, Janelle Schroeder, contacted us to see if anyone (especially in the Denver area) recycles trophies/medals. With so many of us in the baby boomer generation now downsizing and clearing out, it would be great to be able to recycle a bit of our past to a non-profit. Maybe one of our specialty running stores might want to take this on as a campaign, and public schools could be pointed toward that store to pick up what they need?
Finally, one of the wonderful benefits in my side life as an emcee/event announcer is getting to be with friends I've enjoyed over decades. This coming weekend, I will be announcing again with Ron Bostwick (of Bolder Boulder starting line fame!) at the Hot Chocolate 15K/ 5K. In spite of tough weather earlier in the week, it looks like it will be perfect conditions on Sunday!
Speaking of announcers, after he had finished the Quad Cities Half Marathon www.qcmarathon.org where he spoke at the previous night's pasta dinner, Runner's World Magazine's Chief Running Officer, Bart Yasso joined me to announce for a while. He's right up there with my favorite people in our sport. I hope you get to meet him down the road!
