RUNNING USA

We at Running USA, want to provide you - a runner and fan of our sport - two resources which will keep you current with news in our industry from vendor announcements to technology enhancements and trends, to race results and stories from our members.

Dear Athlete,

What a month May turned out to be! Two top highlights that stand out are the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Weekend, setting a new registration record of over 17,000 (when this event was birthed over 10 years ago, I never imagined this kind of growth). We're already working on the 10th Anniversary on May 17th! Check out the video below: Colfax Highlights.  Another amazing Bolder Boulder is in the record books with over 47,000 entrants (my daughter, Page labeled it her "favorite" race, and I saw a picture of John Meyer with his daughter at the BB finish line that was a top five happy Dad picture!).

With the warm weather and longer daylight, training and racing is now in high gear. Click on the BKB Calendar of races and pick your favorite charity.

One that has been very personal for me over the past few years is Jodi's Race. It memorializes a wonderful person whom I pray for often, Jodi Brammeier.

In '09 Jodi and I met, and she invited BKB to manage her event. This began a terrific friendship. Her passion for running and awareness about Ovarian Cancer was unmatchable. When she was struck down by that vicious disease just a short time after the first race in '10, like so many others, I was heartbroken. We lost a cause champion. Lonnie Somers will be announcing for the event. Many of you know Lonnie as the owner of Hallucination Sports timing, and also the voice of the Colfax Marathon (among others), but he and his family are personally connected to the cause with his mother in-law battling this terrible disease. I will be in Kansas City and will miss this year's 5th anniversary event on June 7th, but if you attend, I promise you'll feel her spirit!

Amazing things happen out there on the roads and trails. A very good friend of mine, John Dunbar, whom I trained with for well over a decade, was out for a run with his dog last month. He felt wobbly and had to sit down on the High Line Canal trail to recover. Instead he had a heart "incident." It was a miracle that another runner was at the same spot at the same time and saw him fall. The miracle? She had her mobile phone, called 911, and an ambulance arrived within a couple of minutes, and they saved his life.

And the rest of the story? John has been given thumbs up on running again but this mysterious, fabulous woman who bothered to carry a phone (my Renee thinks everyone should!) remains unknown to John. If you know who she is, please let me know. John wants to thank her for giving him his life back!

I have always cared about high school track, so when a story comes in front of me, I need to share it. Another running buddy, Bob Elliott, said this about his high school, Kearney High in Nebraska: "Kearney High School Track did it again!  This by no means was one of their best teams (they came in second at an invitational meet for the first time in 23 years this season).  They came out of nowhere -- a true program win". Here's the link to Kearny HS's success story!

My announcing travels take me to Annapolis and Napa for Zooma Women's Races, and to Kansas City for the venerable Hospital Hill Run so if you happen to be running one of those, please say hello!

Enjoy these beautiful days!
