New Birth of Freedom: The Enduring Importance of the American Civil War

Raging over the course of four terrible years, the American Civil War took the lives of at least 750,000 people, and left most of the South in a state of desolation. Professor Dan Breen,of Newbury College in Brookline, MA will explore some of the ways in which American life was transformed by the war, in ways that no one could have predicted at the time of the first cannonades at Fort Sumter. Dr. Keith Williams discusses the work of three giants of nineteenth century American letters relative to the American Civil War.
