Toad Lily

Kale
It is easy to tell fall is here at the library gardens. Leaves have slowly settled in around the plantings, almost like a warm colorful blanket as the cooler temps are felt.  For many of the plantings at the library they seem to stand up and thrive now that the humid hot days of summer have left us. The annuals on either side of the entrance way are still looking good for the most part, who would have thought by the middle of October they would still stand strong, covered in blooms? We have had many questions regarding the Zebra Tomatoes, which have been slow to ripen but were so delicious. The curly leaf kale hasalso been a favorite. The secret to its success has probably been the irrigation system during the long hot summer. A few years ago we planted the red kale variety and it also look wonderful from June to frost, something to remember next year as an addition to anyone's perennial garden, it doesn't just belong in vegetable gardens!

Most people think by now there isn't much blooming in our perennial gardens, but not true at the library! Walk around the path to the back garden and check out the Toad lily (Tricyrtis hirta). These Asian curiosities bloom with orchid-like flowers that demand a closer look. They bloom in the fall in part sun/shade. Also in bloom, is Eupatorium 'Chocolate' (Ageratina altissima) or common name white snakeroot. A late bloomer it features white fluffy flowers on top of shiny purple stems rising 3' tall. It is a native woodland plant and just gorgeous! You won't be able to miss the lovely stand of bright yellow chrysanthemums along the side of the building. The wind and rain have laid them down but they are New Hampshire hearty and a bright spot in the library garden year every year.

We are hoping for a nice snow covering this year to protect our plants during the cold winter months. The Amherst garden Club meets all winter and guests are always welcome. Check out our website and blog at  www.amherstgardenclub.org for upcoming speakers. Enjoy your winter and the garden club workers and plants will be back next spring to once again greet the library visitors!

Remember, the library is a happening place and your library card is your ticket to free books, magazines, music, movies, Internet access, enriching programs and much more!

Sincerely,
