Greetings,
February is Health Awareness Month. I have included some articles and recipes for you in support of a healthy heart. Did you know that we are constantly updating our website with articles and videos? Check it out.
I'd like to thank everyone who came out to our seminar last month on Healthy Weight Loss. It was a packed house. We'll be running that seminar again sometime in the next few months. Metabolic Syndrome and Heart Disease
| |
By Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath
One in four Canadians suffer from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
A diagnosis of metabolic syndrome can be made when an individual meets at least 3 of the following criteria:
High fasting plasma glucose (>6.1 mmol/l)
Hypertriglyceridemia (>1.7 mmol/l)
Low HDL cholesterol (<1.0 mmol/l- males, <1.3 mmol/l-females)
Hypertension (blood pressure >130/85)
Central obesity (waist circumference of >102 cm- males, 88cm-females)
If you have metabolic syndrome you are threetimes more likely to develop coronary heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in Canada. You are also three times more likely to have a stroke and five times more like to develop type II diabetes. In all of these cases, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, high levels of triglycerides or cholesterol lead to development of plaque/clots or build-up along the wall of arterial blood vessels. The vessels slowly narrow over time until eventually there is a severe reduction in blood flow (ischemia or MI), or no blood flow at all (stroke). Please click to read the full article.
Please contact Reception for more information or to book an appointment with Dr Shalviri.

BACK to Basics
| |
By Dr Garret Kusch, Chiropractor
Have you ever been taught how to care for your low back? Is it best to bend at the knees to lift things? Are sit ups good for my low back? What about my core or more specifically my transverse abdominis? Come to think of it, what the heck is a transverse abdominis? With all the specific information and detailed programs with respect to low back health, have we all forgotten the basics of back care? Actually, have we ever really known the basics of back care? Have we ever been taught about how to take care of our backs? The more and more people I talk to I would say the answer to these questions is either 'No', or 'I bend my knees to lift'. Well let me give you a few bits of information more of which can be learned and expanded upon in a series of short presentations we're going to call, BACK TO BASICS (oh and the pun was totally intended).
Firstly, it's all about EDUCATION...read the full article here.
So stay tuned for presentations in the near future on the specifics of how to get "Back to the Basics".

Foam Rolling 101
|
By Dr Ryan Flatt, Chiropractor
Foam rolling as a form of treatment has had a recent increase in popularity in the last few years. Foam rolling is being used in all types of different forums from personal trainers, included in yoga classes and as a tool for personal treatment for muscle tension and injuries. Rolling is used in all different ways with the same goal in mind, to loosen tight muscles. That being said, a common misconception with foam rolling is that there is a similar effect as is seen with stretching or with myofascial release. With the research I've come across this is a common claim, yet stretching and myofascial release require movement of the actual tissue in order to have the desired effect on the tissue (break up adhesions, lengthen tissue). From what I can best extrapolate from the research is that with foam rolling there is compression of the tissue which in essence affects some of the neural receptors in both muscle and fascia. This means is that you are basically shutting down the neural input so that it can be retrained.
This is a great explanation on foam rolling.
Foam rolling is a great adjunct to treatment by a therapist to help keep your body injury free.
Our Chiropractors Dr Flatt and Dr Kusch will be offering a complimentary workshop on Foam Rolling later this month. Please contact Reception by Friday Feb 17th to express your interest and we'll set a date and time based on that.

Gluten Sensitivity - What's the Deal?
| |
By Dani Foster, Registered Acupuncturist
- There are more than 150 diseases and symptoms associated with gluten sensitivity
- It may be the root cause of many cancers, autoimmune diseases, neurological diseases, weight gain, chronic pain syndromes, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and many psychological conditions
- Clear causal connection to gluten sensitivity has been shown with some cases of osteoporosis, epilepsy, learning disorders, ADD, infertility, miscarriage, premature births, and chronic liver disease
- Gluten sensitivity may lead to other dietary sensitivities
- Gluten sensitivity inhibits the function of the small intestine, thereby inhibiting nutrient absorption, digestive hormone/enzyme release and barrier function (against toxins, bacteria, yeast, parasites, etc)
Dani combines nutritional guidance and acupuncture when helping her
patients with gluten sensitivity to bring the body back into balance and heal. She will be presenting at our complimentary seminar later this month on Feb 27th @ 6.45pm. RSVP.
Dani recently visited with local South Surrey business Pikinik. Everything in their shop is gluten and nut free. Most of the baked goods are also dairy and soy free. She's given them
a big thumbs up for knowledge, quality and taste!
Dani Foster offers complimentary 15 minute consulations for anyone with questions about how acupuncture can help them. Please contact Reception to book in or for more information.

Practitioner Spotlight: Dr Ryan Flatt, Chiropractor

My favorite indulgence is ...
Right now...Caramilk bars, more specifically the caramilk easter bunnies
In my free time I like to ...
Do the usual stuff, hang out with friends, family, read, watch tv, eat good food, drink good beer and wine, exercise.
My favorite TV show of all time is ...
The Simpsons.....but right now I am really into 'Gold Rush' or 'Bering Sea Gold'. I find it really interesting how hard these guys work so hard for such a little amount of gold, yet this little amount of shiny rocks is worth so much. I guess it's why they call it gold fever!
One thing you may not know about me is ...
My first name is actually William...But I go by my middle name, Ryan. Family tradition I was named after my Grandfather who went by his middle name also.
The best advice I was ever given ...
Take care of your body, taking care of your body is crucial to being the happiest person you can be.
If I could leave on a plane today I would travel to ...
Somewhere where there is a jungle, (Vietnam, Laos) I really want to ride on the back of an elephant in jungle trek. Or to Australia, to swim/dive with whale sharks!
My biggest pet peeve would be ...
Those individual who wear their watch on the right arm. Someone once told me the history of why a watch was to be worn on the left arm. It has always stuck with me, to me it looks odd when I see someone wearing a watch on their left arm. Check this out
This year I plan to ...
Train and Race Ironman Canada for a third time, this encompasses the first 8 months of the year.
I decided on a career in Chiropractic care because ...
I have always been interested in anatomy and exercise and health. I was exposed to Chiropractic as a patient at a point in my life where I was trying to decide on what to be when I 'grew up.' Throughout the treatment I received I always thought what a cool profession Chiropractic was, and thought it would be a good fit for me. From that point forward I geared my education towards enrollment in Chiropractic school and a career in Chiropractic.
