FOMO, or "fear of missing out" is a very real phenomenon that was first studied in 2013 by Andrew K. Pryzybylski. The study attempts to relate FOMO to the psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. In addition, it attempts to prove FOMO as a cause of ambivalence toward social media. Through his study, Pryzybylski discovered that different FOMO levels vary based on demographics, as well as emotional and behavior traits.
