National Wreaths Across America Day
Riverside Cemetery Gate House
1301 Riverside Dr., Macon, GA
12:00 Noon, Saturday, December 14, 2013

Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed on gravestones in remembrance of those who have served in the United States military. These seven wreaths, specially designated with flags for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and POW/MIA will be displayed during the ceremony. This ceremony will honor the sacrifices made by these brave men and women and stand as an example to our younger generations as they reflect on the cost of freedom. Military honors will be conducted by the color guard of Robins Air Force Base. The invocation will be given by Reverend Ben Gosden.

In addition to the seven ceremonial wreaths, twenty-five wreaths have been donated for placement in Riverside Cemetery by the Knights of Columbus and four wreaths by individual donors. The Knights of Columbus and the Middle Georgia Logistical Officers Association will place wreaths in the cemetery following the ceremony. Other volunteers and participants are welcome to assist with wreath placement. A brief biography of each veteran will be read as part of the wreath-laying ritual. Refreshments and hot cider will be provided in the Gate House afterwards.

Over 800 participating locations across the country will simultaneously conduct this ceremony at 12 noon EST to coincide with the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Wreaths Across America began with just a few thousand commemorative wreaths. This year, more than 160,000 wreaths will be placed on gravestones across the country.

In 2008 and 2009, the United States Congress unanimously decreed the second Saturday of December as National Wreaths Across America Day. December 14 will mark the 20th anniversary of Wreaths Across America that began with a Maine wreath maker who donated dozens of wreaths to adorn the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
