If you need help finding what you want, we are here to help. Items are also available to be borrowed interlibrary, through the Michigan Electronic Library. Just ask!

Did you know that you can reserve titles yourself by going online to MCDLibrary.org? And of course you can also call us to reserve a title. Ludington Library's phone is (231) 843-8465 and Scottville's is (231) 757-2588. Don't have time to come to the library? This month's book is "Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do" by Wallace J. Nichols, marine biologist.

From Amazon.com: Why are we drawn to the ocean each summer? Why does being near water set our minds and bodies at ease? In BLUE MIND, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes how we think about these questions, revealing the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water. Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with compelling personal stories from top athletes, leading scientists, military veterans, and gifted artists, he shows how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success.

BLUE MIND not only illustrates the crucial importance of our connection to water-it provides a paradigm shifting "blueprint" for a better life on this Blue Marble we call home.

Visit or call the Libraries at (231) 843-8465 or (231) 757-2588 to reserve a copy, or to ask about getting a copy through MeLCat

Turfgrass Information File

When I first moved to Michigan, I heard mention of the Turfgrass Library at Michigan State University. Turfgrass wasn't a term I was familiar with and I wondered what a library devoted to it would consist of. Since then, I've learned - Number 1, that Turfgrass is an area of planted grasses (think golf courses, sports fields, parks, landscape design, roadsides); Number 2, that MSU is known world-wide for their extensive resources of publications, studies, and research on this topic; and, Number 3, that the Turfgrass Information File (TGIF) is a MeL Database. Established in 1983 as a cooperative project of the United States Golf Association and the Michigan State University Libraries' Turfgrass Information Center, TGIF provides bibliographic and descriptive records of all types of work related to Turfgrass culture.

So, what kind of information might you look for in this MeL database? Some examples include: grub control, fertilization, winterkill, invasive plants, and pesticides residue. Parks and grounds managers, landscapers, and golf course managers are among the businesses and organizations in your community who might be interested in the specialized information found in the Turfgrass Information File

Michigan residents or Michigan library access only.

MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL?  Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at [email protected] or visit mel.org.  We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your public service colleagues.
