Summer is in full swing, and outdoor activities abound. Whether you are traveling, working, playing, or relaxing, we have books and DVDs to take along. Your libraries are here to provide you with great reading, entertainment, information and education.  There are plenty of  resources and programs available at both Ludington and Scottville libraries for everyone to join in.

 

Every month the libraries add hundreds of new books and DVDs to the shelves.  Click the 'NEW BOOK ALERTS' below to see just some of the new books and DVDs the library offers.   Visit the library and check them out or go online to reserve them.  Don't have time to come to the library?  MCDL's collection of downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music and videos continues to grow.  Check out all the new titles at the library's UpNorth Digital Collection.  And if you love magazines then read your favorite titles (over 100) available at Zinio- with no check out or return you just download and read -  FREE.

NEW BOOKS AT VIDEOS AT MCDL

 New Book Alerts 

Friends of the Library Annual Library Book Sale

When: Saturday, July 13, 9 am - 5 pm, and 
Sunday, July 14, 10 am - 5 pm

Where: Outside the Ludington Library,
217 E Ludington Ave, Ludington, MI

The Friends of the Library raises funds which are turned over to the library for various uses.  The Friends have provided funds for new books and videos, book shelves, book carts, storage cabinets, paperback racks, and new furniture in the Reading Area.  The Friends offer funds which are used for the library's many children's programs, from providing paperback books to give as prizes for the Summer Reading Program, to paying for performers and events such as the summer magic show.
 
Cirque Amongus
    

Coming to celebrate Summer Reading on Monday, July 1, 1:00 pm at the Ludington Library! A Cirque Amongus Show is a surprising combination of comedy, circus skills and audience participation. The performers put on a display of teamwork and perseverance guaranteed to amaze and delight audiences of all ages. Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a FREE program, made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Ludington Library.

Magic Show!
    

Families of all ages are invited to Dig into Reading! at the MCDL with Magician Gordon Russ. Gordon will be giving 3 performances Monday, July 8. He will be amazing Ludington audiences at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm at the Ludington Library, and he will astound the people of Scottville at 4:00 pm at the Scottville Library.

 

Gordon's shows display plenty of sleight-of-hand, oodles of jokes, and loads of audience participation. This performance is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Ludington Library.   


Paleo Joe
    

Children of all ages are invited to meet Paleo Joe at the Library in Ludington for a Dinosaur Adventure on Monday, July 15 at 1:00 pm. For more than 30 years Joseph Kchodl's high-energy program has been bringing dinosaurs to life for students. His T-rex tooth, velociraptor skull, dinosaur puppets and variety of amazing fossils make children feel like they are actually there with the dinosaurs, millions of years ago.  


Balloon Twist
Balloon Twist     
Children old enough to tie shoes independently are invited to Mason County District Library in Ludington, Monday, July 22, 1:00 pm to learn to twist balloons into animals and other fun shapes. Expert balloon twister Joel Tacey entertains while twisting the balloons.

 

 

Juggling
    

Learn to juggle with Joel, Monday, July 29, 1 pm at Ludington Library. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Ludington Library.  Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult.  All Mason County District Library programs are free.

 

Friday Night Live  
   

Starting Friday, July 19, stop by the Library's booth at Friday Night Live, between 6:00 - 9:00 pm for yummy cool treats and fun crafts.


Teddy Bear Picnic

Teddy Bear
Children are invited to bring a favorite stuffed friend to a Teddy Bear Picnic at the Scottville Library on Wednesday, July 10 at 10:30 am. Learn about teddy bears, create a craft, and share a picnic with your favorite bear or sleep buddy.

Cupcake Camp 

Cupcake lovers unite! CupCake Camp is coming to Ludington, Wednesday, July 10, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the West Shore Bank Room at the Ludington Library. You can buy cupcakes to share, bake cupcakes to share, enter your sweeties in the competition, or just EAT CUPCAKES! If you are sharing cupcakes, your creations must be registered by NOON Monday, July 9. Registration forms are available here and at the Libraries in Ludington and Scottville. Categories for competition are Most Unique Ingredients, Ludington Theme, or Best Kid's Design.
 
Magic Lessons!  

Gordon the Magician will be at the Library in Ludington, Thursday, July 18 to teach young magicians some of his favorite tricks. Magic students age 8 and younger are invited to attend a class at 1:00 pm. Aspiring magicians age 8 and older will have class at 2:30 pm. Registration is required, as space is limited for this popular event. Please call 231-843-8465 to register.
 
Science Camp
    

Young scientists are invited to 'Just Imagine' Science Camp at the Mason County District Library, 217 East Ludington Avenue in Ludington. 

  • Monday, July 15, 10:00 am to noon is a Fossil Dig with PaleoJoe
  • Monday, July 22, 10:00 am to noon is Tales from Beneath - Weird Science
  • And Monday, July 29, 11:00-1:30, we will go to Ludington State Park for a fossil hunt

Space is limited for this program, and registration is REQUIRED. Students entering 3rd through 6th grades next fall may register at the library. This program is free of charge. Registration forms are available at the Mason County District Libraries in Ludington and Scottville.

Thanks to support from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Library of Big Green  Michigan, FREE passes into MI Big Green Gym are available through nearly 500 libraries around Michigan. More than 100 state parks are available for you to explore - many offering free Rec 101 programs. Choose your state park by visiting the Michigan DNR Parks and Trails Directory!

Passes are valid for seven days after check-out and are good for one free day into any state park or recreation area, or at the KLR Splashpad in Oxford Township, a universally accessible facility that is a hit with kids of all ages and abilities.

Dig into Digital at the Libraries 
  

The Library continues to offer one-on-one instruction on using eReaders and audio devices with Library materials. Drop in Mondays any time between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm at Ludington Library to test drive top-selling devices and learn how to use the Library's FREE downloadable collection. 

 

If you are in the Scottville area, Chris is also available for digital help on Wednesday evenings between 5:30 and 7:30

 

If you already have a device and are looking for assistance, please bring a laptop, if possible, and the USB cable to connect your device to a computer.

Block Party Saturdays   
  

Children and their families are invited to a Block Party using Lego brand bricks every Saturday between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, at Ludington Library. Blocks will be provided by the library. Children under age 3 are NOT invited to this event - there are many, many small parts that could be ingested.
