Quotes to Ponder

"If your compassion does not include yourself it is incomplete."

-Jack Kornfield

"If you want to do your best for future generations of humanity, for your friends and family, you must begin by taking good care of yourself."

-Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche

"Compassion isn't some kind of self-improvement project or ideal that we're trying to live up to. Having compassion starts and ends with having compassion for all those unwanted parts of ourselves, all those imperfections that we don't even want to look at."

-Pema Chodron

 Greetings!

It's been an amazing summer at BYM with over 80 students on the yoga challenge and many more beginning their own yoga journeys with us! Others too have disappeared from the yoga scene as different travels and children home from school have posed their own restrictions. Now that the summer is coming to an end it's time to get back to yoga even though you may be a little nervous at the prospect of the hot room after all this time or be judging yourself for not practicing for so long.

I got an email from one of our students who expressed these sentiments. She said, "I can feel how desperately my body and soul needs the yoga, the studio and the community. To be honest though I feel resistant because of how long it has been. I feel like I have disappointed myself and my Bikram family by letting myself go this long. I am sure I have completely lost my practice by now and in ways I feel insecure about how much of a beginner I will be. I know I shouldn't worry about things like that. However, I have always been the kind of person to put a lot of pressure on myself to be the best I can be. How can I get through this so I can just get myself back in that studio?"

If you are feeling this way, I want you to take yourself back to when you were attending regularly. Imagine how you would react if you saw a fellow student who hadn't been to class in awhile. Even if you noticed that they weren't doing as well as they used to, you wouldn't judge or send negative energy their way, would you? You'd welcome them back and encourage them. You'd be compassionate. This is the same way the people who knew you will feel - they will simply be happy you are back and encourage you to keep coming to class.

Sometimes, we all need to be reminded that we don't have to be perfect to have a place in the yoga room. We all fall off the bandwagon sometimes. We also all have to face our own inner critic, with its pressures to be "the best" and its assumptions that others are disappointed in and looking down on us. I know from personal experience how hard it can be to stand back up in the face of that judge's verdict!

I invite you to ponder something that Bikram has said, that through yoga we can turn our mind from our worst enemy into our best friend. Part of the journey in the hot room is developing a greater understanding of and compassion for ourselves. Far too often we look at ourselves in the mirror and see strangers we have come to battle with. What a surprise it can be to one day find yourself smiling when you look in that mirror-- recognizing a dear, dear friend.

If you have been away from the studio awhile, I hope you will return to class. You will be welcomed back with open arms and a studio full of support!

I look forward to seeing you in the hot room!

Bikram Yoga Challenge Success Story

Ann Rheinhold is the second person to complete the Summer Challenge, the goal being to take at least 50 classes during June, July and August. She took 50 classes in just 52 days, and she's still attending almost daily! Way to go, Ann!

ann r "As I reflect on accomplishing my yoga challenge I realize that the last 50+ classes have helped me persevere and have given me a connection to my inner most thoughts. I find myself in a calmer state in which I accept, reflect and perfect. I also feel strength and a sense of accomplishment.

Before Bikram Yoga I was unable to walk on my toes as my foot would collapse because I have no feeling in my left foot along with other injuries. However, since I have been practicing (and I do mean practicing) the accomplishments have been amazing!  It has been a constant battle to balance, but my foot no longer collapses. I am getting closer and closer to making it through the balancing series (especially standing bow) as these postures are my greatest challenge. I am going deeper and further than I thought possible.

The energy of those around me has also been important as it has had a true impact - the transference is amazing!  I find that obstacles are no longer as big a burden as they used to be and solutions are easier to attain because of the clarity of thought that results from my meditative state. I have become a Bikram addict, but it is a great addiction!!  Here's to practicing today, tomorrow and always! Viva Bikram!"

We are excited to announce that the lobby area is soon to be remodeled! We have teamed up with Falcon Design Build to create a lobby that will be a more beautiful, functional, comfortable and unique zone to enjoy.

The owner of Falcon Design Build is a long term practitioner of Bikram Yoga and the designer of the Bikram Studio in Athens (known for its beauty and thoughtful design). With his vision and abilities, we can all be excited to see and experience the new space! Designs are underway, and we hope to have the project completed by October.

Share The Love - New Referral Rewards Program

share the love

We are dedicated to sharing Bikram Yoga with the community and appreciate it when you refer your friends and family to us! You may have already experienced the joy of seeing a loved one improve their life because you encouraged them to try yoga. Seeing them happier and feeling better is a reward in itself!

However, we'd like to make sure you know we value your referrals. We have created a rewards system in which you earn 10 rewards points when you refer someone (they just need to write you as their referral source on their Registration Form). Once you reach 30 points, you can redeem them for $30 to use when making your next purchase!

New Rental Options & Procedures

mats

We are now using blue Kulae EASYmats as our rental mats for $1. Rental towels are also available for $1 each.

We have selected Kulae because their mats do not absorb sweat, so they are not subject to the "stinky" factor that can afflict other rubber yoga mats. They can be easily cleaned and dry quickly.

* If you rent a mat, after class hang it on the ballet bars located on the back wall of the yoga room.

* If you rent a towel, please place it in the blue hamper on wheels located in the dressing room.

Many thanks!
