Looking For Something Fun to Do This Summer?
Message from the CEO
Happy summer! I hope that you enjoy this new version of our newsletter.

Summer is the perfect time to focus on Family. Many families plan summer outings and vacations. School age children are out of school for summer recess. Additionally, sports leagues and fun at the beach are in the forefront of many of us as family focused activities. This is a very busy time for many!

I wish you all a safe an enjoyable summer and hope that you will find quality time to spend with your family whenever possible. After all, there truly is nothing more important than family and/or your family of friends!

The Peabody Team was very honored to welcome Senator Joan Lovely to our offices on June 23rd to learn about some of the work we are doing in her district. As a champion of children and families, Senator Lovely is as committed as we are to strengthening communities and giving them the resources they need to succeed.

During her visit, she heard presentations from four of our staff members on their work in the district. Highlights included:

  • Barbara St. Pierre spoke about the rewards of working with families in transition at two homeless shelters in partnership with Citizens for Adequate Housing.
  • Andrea Hein shared her experiences working with inmates at Middleton House of Correction, and the rewards of helping individuals succeed after their release.
  • Chirstina Vesprini's work with mothers battling post partum depression highlighted the need for increased screening and erasing the stigma associated with this disorder.
  • Indira Gumbe shared the struggles facing our refugee community, and the work she is doing to help them get the mental health services they need to thrive.
  • Lauren Chiancolo's work at Higgins Middle School reminded us that integrating care in a school setting increases access to services for young people.

Transitional-Age Youth and Human Trafficking
By Theresa Tromblay

Human traffickers have made a business out of taking advantage of people in vulnerable positions. A $150 billion per year business, the International Labor Organization estimates that, around the world, there are currently 20.9 million victims of human trafficking. While victims and survivors come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of educational and socio-economic origins, they have all been lured into modern-day slavery by someone who leverages their vulnerabilities and makes false promises of a better job, a loving relationship, or a stable place to live.

Transitional-age youth (youth between the ages of 16 and 24) represent a particularly at-risk population, and are very susceptible to being trafficked. For youth without a consistent network of family or friends, the combination of entering legal adulthood, and simultaneously losing supportive services (DCF, DMH, etc.), presents a unique set of challenges that leave them vulnerable to victimization. Human traffickers often prey on this group due to their transient and isolated nature. Traffickers know that these youth are not connected to family or friends who would be concerned for their safety if they were to disappear for an extended period of time. Read More

 Kinship Care
September was designated as Kinship Care month in 2015 to acknowledge the important role that relatives and friends play in caring for our youth. In the US, relatives collectively raise 1.3 million children, and the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren has grown by 40% over the last decade.

At Family Continuity we believe the term "family" extends beyond the immediate family to encompass friends, relatives and the community as a whole. This September, we take a moment to honor the grandparents, relatives and friends who have dedicated their hearts and lives to a child. If you are a caregiver and are looking for resources, call us toll free at 1-866-219-3320 to learn more about how we can support you in the important role you play in a child's life.
