Newsletter                    September 2013
Greetings from the CEO,

Occasionally, while thinking about a theme for our "Family Corner" I'll do a search to see what causes have attached themselves to a particular month, week, or day. It can be a fun exercise. For instance, did you know that September 2 is "National Beheading Day"?, which is all the more interesting when you find out that the 15th is "Felt Hat day", which begs the question, "What do you need the hat for?" Anyway,  apart from the comedic value, occasionally, you do come across some reminders of very important issues. To this point, September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, certainly a serious matter in America and throughout much of the world that affects the present and future health of millions of children. See our "Family Corner" for some ideas about how to keep your family fit and healthy. While you're at it, register for our "High Five 5K" fundraiser road race. That will help drop a couple pounds...

Did you know that September 28 is "Ask a Stupid Question Day"?...Isn't that what I just did?

Sincerely,    Family Continuity logo

2013 Client Satisfaction Highlights

Feedback from our consumers means a lot to this agency. It's how we know how to train our staff, what new services to create, where we are hitting our goals, and where there are improvements needed. The summary of Family Continuity's Fiscal Year 2013 (7/1/12- 6/30/13) Client Satisfaction surveys has been completed, and it shows the agency's highest return rate ever, with feedback from 916 individuals.  In addition, the feedback this year was more positive than ever. On a 5 point rating scale, with 4 indicating "Agree" and 5 indicating "Strongly Agree", the agency averaged over 4.5 in answer to the 13 questions that have shown to be the best indicators of both satisfaction and positive outcomes. Overall, 94.8% of 916 clients surveyed reported that they were satisfied with their services, across all of Family Continuity's sites and programs! Good results, but there remains work to do. Closer analysis indicates that while each program has its strengths, each also can improve. For example, it is clear that we need to continue to work to help our families become better connected to other resources and to services they need on the community, beyond what we provide.

Take a look at the information on the 2013 summary page, to see how we approach the survey and what information we've received. And for more information about our quality improvement activities contact Kelly Lindsey, Quality Improvement Coordinator at 978-548-5127. Read on for more details on our success!

Childhood Obesity

Obesity, especially childhood obesity is a difficult topic to talk about. On one hand kids go hungry, unhealthy diets and even malnutrition are common in this country. On the other, unhealthy, cheap, good tasting, high calorie foods are too easy to find. Extra calories would not be such a problem if we were all more physically active, but with the advent of TV and computer games and electronic communication, everyone's physical activity level suffers. The equation is simple, more calories come in, those that aren't burned through activity become fat. While children may see extra weight as an appearance problem, they also see a growing number of overweight adults. The too-thin models, movie stars, and athletes as unattainable, and therefore are unrealistic role models. The problem is serious and becoming epidemic. But we can support healthier children and families. Read on to learn more about the costs of obesity.

Second Year-End Report on the Safety Training Grant

 Safety Matters

Worker safety is very important here at Family Continuity. Over the last five years, the agency has changed its own practice and become a recognized leader initiatives to improve the safety of its own staff and colleagues throughout New England. FY' 2013 marks the end of the second year of Family Continuity's Training Grant through the Massachusetts Department of industrial Accidents (DIA), focusing on preparing the human services field to create safer work environments and giving workers new skills to do their important work. This year, the agency's program exceeded its goals, delivering comprehensive training to over 600 staff, volunteers and interns from more than 35 organizations. Over the two years of the grant, over 1,100 have completed the program, including more than 70 individuals who have completed the Training for Trainers program. In addition, with the passage of the state's first worker safety legislation Massachusetts Safety Law and national social work safety standards NASW Safety Standards (in which Family Continuity played pivotal roles), the agency has focused more attention to helping organizations not just better train staff, but also to create policies, procedures and systems that create safer workplaces. Providing 2-3 hour workshops geared to the leadership of service agencies on worksites and association meetings, Family Continuity has helped nearly 80 organizations think through the development of safety committees, safety and crisis response plans, and a host of policies, procedures, and human resource issues related to protecting their workforce from danger.

The agency has applied once again for a third year of funding through the DIA, and hopes to hear a decision in the early Fall.
