Newsletter                              April 2013
Greetings from the CEO,

It has been a great month for human service worker safety in Massachusetts and nationally. Announced last month, Family Continuity is proud to be part of the enactment and signing of the state's first safety bill, see pictures and article below. In addition, just last week, NASW published its "Guidelines for Social Worker Safety in the Workplace" drawing heavily on the work of this agency and the Massachusetts Safety Taskforce of which we've been an active part. But a great month in terms of politics and guidelines is meaningless if it doesn't translate into keeping safety in the forefront of our thinking... professionally, in our personal lives, and for the individuals and families with which we work (see this month's Family Corner piece regarding Domestice Violence).

Sincerely,    Family Continuity logo

What You Should Know About Domestic Violence...

"They say that you always hurt the ones you love..." but does it have to be that way? Too often, instead of being places where adults and children feel loved, safe and secure, domestic violence can turn home life into frightening nightmares for all family members.

The US Department of Justice defines domestic violence as "a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner". Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. Continue reading here...

School Districts Mull In-House Mental Health Services

Students in Northbridge and Uxbridge may be able to receive mental health services within their high schools next year, as a group is exploring the establishment of in-school behavioral health clinics in the districts.

Representatives from the towns are working jointly to develop a program to offer expanded mental health services that could be a stepping-stone to creating more general school-based health clinics in the future. The group has the support of both districts, and legislators like Sen. Richard Moore and State Rep. Kevin Kuros, who attended a meeting on the topic at Northbridge High School Thursday, February 28.
