REAL STORIES
Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in every community, with families often terrorized, and effective help not always available. Yet, when families and professionals work together, sometimes help can be found from unexpected sources that can make all of the difference to keep a family safe. We often see this through the work of our family partners.

Greetings from the CEO,
In December's message, I put out a challenge to everyone saying that "It would be great if we all could come up with a few random acts of kindness, but if not, please at least avoid the random acts of meanness." Looking over the last month as I write this, we've seen evidence of both.
Sadly, enough has been written about the horrific events in Newtown, CT that I won't go into them here except to say that the tragedy will darken the memory of this holiday season for most of us for a long time. Yet, much kindness was also in evidence. In response to the call for examples, Family Continuity staff gave their stories (one of which is this month's "Real Story") and they provided some hope and joy to offset the bad news we hear too often.
While tragedy happens from time to time, these acts happen every day. Check out some of these examples from our Family Continuity Staff, and look for an opportunity to demonstrate kindness on your own.
Sincerely,
Earl "Skip" Stuck |

In 1974, Massachusetts enacted a law that for the first time decriminalized youth who were runaways, truant, or otherwise classified as "stubborn children". This prevented children who committed "status" offenses, like running away, that would not be against the law for an adult, from being committed to the youth correctional system. Although groundbreaking at the time, the Children in Need of Services Act or CHINS, eventually stalled through underfunding, bureaucratic red tape, and turf disputes among law enforcement, courts, schools and social service agencies. The system was breaking, and everyone knew it. By 2005, it was clear that while its purpose remained important, the law needed to be revamped. There began a seven year legislative process that culminated on August 7, 2012, when Governor Patrick signed into law Senate Bill 2410, reforming the CHINS statute. Continue reading here... |

Talking to Kids about Tragedy:
Newspapers, television and the internet have been exhaustive in their coverage of the terrifying events in Newtown, CT. There is little more that we could add to the dialog here. However, this kind of incident always raises very difficult questions and uncomfortable conversations with children. We've been flooded with "helpful tips" related with how to talk to children about tragedy, and thought we'd pass along some of the more helpful links from the batch. Agency News
Grandparent Support Group Grant Received Families, as we so often say, come in all sizes, shapes and forms, few looking like the stereotyped standard. Family Continuity has paid especially close attention to families that are headed by grandparents and other older relatives, where many of the challenges of raising children are amplified by age, health, financial, social, and other concerns. Experience has shown that one resource in particular is highly valued by grandparents raising children, and that is the peer support group. Through its work on behalf of the state Grandparents Commission, helping to develop its information website, providing facilitation and presentations for several current support groups and advocating for more resources, the agency has developed a reputation as a leader in helping these families. We are pleased to announce a next step in this work through the award of a $5,000.00 grant from DCF to sponsor the first grandparent support group to serve families on Nantucket.
