Greetings from the CEO,
The Fall is one of the most active times of the year at Family Continuity, and this last October has witnessed the agency's involvement in several events that take us onto new ground.
There are a lot of great things to report, but read on about our first successful fund-raiser road race, the opening of a social work library in Yerevan Armenia, and a Worker Safety Forum, developed and presented to a delegation of South Korean social workers.
As well the "Family Corner" and this month's real story both demonstrate how we learn when we listen to youth. It has been an eventful month..there is a lot to absorb, so get reading.
Sincerely,
Earl "Skip" Stuck |
High Five to the High Five 5k
Family Continuity's first annual fundraiser Road Race, the High Five 5k was held on Saturday, October 6th on Town Neck in Sandwich, with proceeds going to benefit our Family Support Fund. About 70 racers and their families kicked off the event with a Friday evening pasta dinner provided by race host, Hemisphere's Restaurant. On Saturday, the race kicked off at 9:00am with 256 registered runners, and a large group of friends and family members there to cheer everyone on. This first time event netted over $3,600 for the Family Support Fund. Continue reading about this amazing event here... |
Memorial Library for Diruhi Mattian
In February, 2008, our agency lost one of its best friends, colleagues, and ultimately inspirations, when Diruhi Mattian's life was taken while on a home visit, the result of a violent assault. Many of you are familiar with this tragic story, which will imprinted in the agency's memory forever. You probably also know that in her memory, Family Continuity has dedicated itself to creating a "culture of safety" for not only its staff, but also others in the human service field, as well as the families and individuals we serve, through our training and outreach activities.
However, here is a chapter that you don't know about. As proof of the saying "the apples don't fall far from the tree", a memorial was conceived and carried out by Diruhi's daughters, Armine and Ani Nalbandian, to open a library in their mother's honor in the country of Diruhi's birth, Armenia. Officially named The Diruhi Matevosian (her maiden name) Library , it opened in Yerevan, Armenia on September 13, 2012. Read more about this memorial to our friend and colleague... |
Family Corner:
What we learn when we listen to youth...YouthMOVE
"Voice and Choice" is more than just a slogan, or simply a title for our annual training conference. It is the key to empowering people to change their own lives. The opportunity to speak up, to be heard and supported to make good decisions underlies all that we do professionally, as friends, and within our own families. Nowhere is the value of "Voice", of self expression
more evident than in our work with youths.
