Good afternoon!

It's safe to say that Autumn is finally here... Which gives us (or me, at the very least) an excuse to start opening "seasonally appropriate" wines; check out our Autumn Reds collection for more details!

This week we have four great new Wines of the Week, from Argentina, Italy, France and California.

We have new arrivals from Fattoria Selvapiana in Tuscany; two incredible Chiantis from a fantastic producer.

Sandra Oldfield from Tinhorn Creek paid us a visit this week and chats with John in our weekly video, and finally, don't forget to check out our upcoming Wagner Family tasting, featuring some of California's coolest wine producers.

Cheers!

Pampas del Sur 2013 Chardonnay Chenin
Regular Price: $10.90     W.O.W. Price: $8.90
An intriguing blend of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. This wine has pure aromas of stone fruits and white flowers. The palate is soft, with flavours of papaya and honeysuckle. Crisp, refreshing and elegant, this wine would pair up quite nicely with poultry dishes."

Casa Catelli 2010 Toscana Rosso
Regular Price: $19.90     W.O.W. Price: $16.90
Dark, concentrated garnet colour. Strong scent of black currant, spice and a hint of bell pepper. Rich and concentrated on the palate with vibrant notes of blueberry and dry prunes, together with leather and tobacco. Lovely long finish. Great value!

Chateau Pitray Madame 2010 Côtes de Castillon
Regular Price: $29.90      W.O.W. Price: $23.90
Ripe and succulent with abundant notes of black cherries, black currants and licorice with a hint of barrique in the background. Medium-bodied with splendid richness and depth, another knockout to rival their superb 2009 and finer than many St Emilions at more than twice the price.

Ojai 2010 Riesling 'Kick on Ranch'
Regular Price: $37.90
W.O.W. Price $29.90

"Green-tinged straw. Racy aromas of lime, grapefruit and pear skin, with deeper notes of agave and herbs in the background. Dry, focused, refreshingly bitter citrus pith flavors pack a solid punch but carry no excess weight. The lime note repeats on the long, sappy, linear finish."

Selvapiana is one of the classic Tuscan fattoria, located in the Chianti Rufina zone.  The estate sprawls over 240 hectares of land of which 45 are planted to vine and 31 to olives.  Originally built as a summer residence for the Florentine bishops, it was purchased in 1827 by Michele Giuntini Selvapiana and since 1957 it has been owned by the fifth generation Giuntini family member, Francesco Giuntini Antinori.  In recent years the estate has been managed by Silvia and Federico Giuntini Masseti who are loyal to the path forged by Francesco, and continue to work closely with Franco Bernabei, the consulting oenologist at Selvapiana since 1978.  Rufina's soil of galestro mixed with limestone and clay combined with its proximity to the Apennines, some of the estate's vineyards are at 400m, provide a special micro-climate for longer ripening fruit with higher acidity. Selvapiana's reputation is based on producing red wines of considerable longevity and terroir from this unique location. Along with the vintage Chianti Rufina, we also have the legendary Chianti Rufina Riserva Bucerchiale.

Fattoria Selvapiana

2011 Chianti Rufina - $34.90

"Good deep red.  Ripe red cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a sappy floral quality.  Juicy and concentrated, offering terrific vibrancy and a sensation of chewy extract.  Strong tobacco and soil tones add complexity to the ripe red fruit and licorice flavors.  Impeccably balanced, deep and very long, this is one of the best Chiantis of its vintage."

Fattoria Selvapiana

2010 Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Bucerchiale - $54.90

"Bright red.  Captivating perfume of raspberry, red cherry, almond paste, graphite, licorice and meat.  At once dense and precise, displaying superb fruit concentration and considerable power.  Finishes rich and long, with big, ripe, chewy tannins and a strawberry syrup nuance."

Wagner Family of Wine

Marquis Wine Cellars would like to invite you to join us at the store on Saturday, October the 4th from 3 to 5pm for a special, FREE tasting of a selection of wines from the Wagner Family, who are responsible for producing such noted brands Caymus, Belle Glos, Mer Soleil, Conundrum and Emmolo.  Peter Lindenlaub, the Canadian Division Manager for Wagner Family of Wine, will be on hand to pour the wines, to answer your questions and talk about the great selection of wines.

The Wagner's have been farming in the Napa Valley since 1906.  In 1972 Charlie Sr. and Lorna Wagner asked their son, Chuck, to join them in starting a winery to be called Caymus Vineyards.  Today, Chuck oversees all vineyard and wine production focusing exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon.  With pride, Chuck's two sons have now joined the family operations; Charlie II making Mer Soleil Chardonnay the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, and Joseph making Belle Glos Pinot Noirs.

We plan on pouring the following wines at this event:

    • 2012 Caymus Vineyards 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon
    • 2011 Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
    • 2012 Belle Glos "Dairyman" Pinot Noir
    • 2012 Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay
    • 2012 Mer Soleil Reserve Chardonnay
    • 2011 Conundrum Red
    • 2012 Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc
