We start the year off with a selection of wines from two French producers. First, we are very pleased to introduce you to the wines of Domaine Robert Denogent. This producer has been on our radar for several years and we are very excited to welcome these wines to our portfolio.

We are also pleased to welcome back the excellent wines from Domaine Grand Nicolet, who produce some of the most sought after wines coming out of the Rasteau appellation these days.

Orders of 6 or more bottles will receive a 5% discount, while orders of 12 or more bottles will receive a 10% discount.  Mixed cases permitted and the case discount only applies to the Denogent and Grand Nicolet wines listed in this offering.

The wines will arrive at the store in February and should you wish to reserve any of the wines listed in this offer, please email Jon Ellison at jonellison@marquis-wines.com.

Domaine Robert Denogent

2011 Mâcon-Solutre "Clos des Bertillonnes" - $34.90
"The 2011 Macon-Solutre Clos des Bertillonnes has an attractive, slightly musky bouquet that is nicely defined. The palate is clean and fresh, with a waxy texture and a toffee-tinged entry that makes it approachable and quite powerful in the mouth. Fine."

2010 Pouilly-Fuissé "La Croix" Vieilles Vignes - $42.90
"Here too discreet wood notes frame a pungent and beautifully well-layered nose of dried apricot, acacia blossom, oak spice and white peach scents. The suave and very concentrated flavors possess an abundance of palate staining dry extract before terminating in a powerful, explosive and scintillating finish. This linear and impeccably well-balanced effort should reward 4 to 6 years of cellar time."

About
This Domaine is headed by Jean-Jacques Robert who in 1998 quit a career in law to take charge of his family's vineyards in Fuisse and Solutre-Pouilly and commenced bottling the wines himself rather than selling it to local co-operatives.  His son, Nicolas, joined him in 2007 and today this father and son duo farm a total of 8.5 hectares, with 5.5 hectares in Pouilly-Fuisse which include some single vineyard bottlings. There is minimal intervention out in the vineyard with complete eschewing of inorganic treatments and harvest is always done by hand and fermentation is natural. In the winery, which an estate agent might euphemistically describe as "cosy," the wines are all treated more or less equally, matured in 228-liter oak barrels with only one racking just prior to bottling. What makes this domaine different is the length of elevage, often up to 18 to 24 months depending on the vintage, an unusually long duration for Macon. These are some of the finest you will find in the region: exemplary, terroir-driven, soulful expressions of Chardonnay that are an absolute pleasure to taste.
Domaine Grand Nicolet

2011 Côtes-du-Rhône - $22.90
"A knockout Cotes du Rhone that does everything right, Bertrand's 2011 Cotes du Rhone is comprised of 70% Grenache and equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan. Aged 14 months in concrete tank, it offers up a terrific bouquet of ripe red and blackcurrants, saddle leather, spice-box and licorice to go with a full-bodied, voluptuous and textured feel on the palate. Buy this beauty by the case and enjoy it over the coming 2-4 years. Drink now-2017.

2011 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes - $29.90
"Even more impressive is the 2011 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes. Comprised of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah - aged all in concrete - that was harvest late in September, it's inky purple color is followed by a dense, serious bouquet of black fruits, plum, new leather and graphite. This full-bodied, structured and fresh effort is one of the more serious Rasteaus in the vintage. Drink it over the coming 8-9 years. Drink 2014-2022."

About
The first hectares of vines at this estate were planted in 1875, with the cellar being built in 1926. At this time it was the first private cellar in Rasteau but vine growing and winemaking did not really start until 1930 when the cereal crops and olive trees were removed in favour of more Grenache and Carignan vines. The current owner, Jean Pierre Bertrand, started working at the estate in 1989 and purchased the estate at 1999. It was at this time that he asked his friend, Philippe Cambie, to help him with his wine business. Today, Jean Pierre is running a 20 ha estate and annually produces nearly 200hl in Cotes du Rhone and 500 hl in Rasteau. The estate is composed mostly of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre, on clay and limestone soil. The viticulture and vinification are very traditional, Jean-Pierre started step by step to give up any chemical treatment and to plough the entire vineyard all year round. Here, the ancestral and traditional methods are permanently facing modern viticulture so as to produce strong character and authentic wines and yet contemporary of their time. Harvest is destemmed at 100% and vinification takes place in concrete tanks and old french oak barrels. The wines show you what the terroir is in Rasteau and they are generous and powerful, with spicy notes, black fruits and "garrigue".
