Lemons Anyone?
During a recent visit with my mom, she shared a presentation she made using lemons. We're all familiar with the phrase, "If life gives you a lemon, make lemonade." She took this a step further and challenged the guests beyond lemonade, as anyone at this point can make lemonade. She asked the question, what else can you do? The attendees began sharing their ideas and soon the room was in full discussion. What a great way to remind people to think outside the box and what has become the norm.
The phrase was coined by writer Elbert Hubbard in a 1915 obituary he published for dwarf actor Marshall P. Wilder. The obituary praises Wilder's optimistic attitude and achievements in the face of his disabilities. Hubbard's statement, "He picked up the lemons that Fate had sent him and started a lemonade-stand." Dale Carnegie is credited with the saying, "If you have a lemon, make a lemonade," of which he credits Julius Rosenwald.
FICAP sat around the table a year ago and tried to decide what to do with their lemons. One of the best ideas was to switch gears and bring the monthly meetings back to their home turf. Each FICAP producer member stepped up and offered to host a meeting at one of their plants. Huge success! The atmosphere allows for a more relaxed setting and more of the FICAP roots to shine through. In August, we travel to Bell Concrete and in September, to Quality.
A challenge was presented to the FICAP Board of Directors and we mastered it! In June, our Florida Knights conquered Palm Coast as we co-hosted the 1st Joint Convention with FC&PA and all involved were thrilled with the outcome. Things went so well that other members of the Concrete Coalition would like to participate in the next joint convention.
FICAP continues to actively participate in the Florida Concrete Coalition and through this venture; a small group of officers and I were able to sit down with Governor Scott. A great experience and confirmation that he really does listen and care about putting Floridians back to work!
The leaders of FICAP are working behind the scenes to expand upon our excellent service to the Florida Independent Producer. We continue to monitor industry activities and we actively participate in as many national and joint efforts as possible. Through this sharing of ideas with others in the industry, we discover valuable resources available to you. Listed below are a few...
We appreciate your continued support and look forward to not only working with you, but spending time with you.

Workers Comp Rate Hike Proposed
The Florida contracting industry could see a hike of 3.5%, and manufacturers could face a 3.2% increase in workers-compensation insurance rates in 2014, according to a filing this week with the state Office of Insurance Regulation. The increase, proposed by the National Council on Compensation Insurance, is expected to be discussed during a public hearing in October. The proposal, if approved by the Office of Insurance Regulation, would take effect in January of 2014.

Do You Verify The Correct Corporate Name For Your Customers?
One might ask why should I bother with getting that information. Actually there are many reasons to do that. Look at it as preventive medicine. If there is a tax collection issue, if you need third party involvement for collections, if you need to litigate an account, or if there is fraud involved, all of these matters can evolve into issues that can be avoided when you have the correct legal name of your customer on file from the beginning.
This should all start with your credit application. Here are some suggested tips:
- Have the sales representative attach the applicant's
business card to the credit application - Verify the corporate name with Secretary of State's website
- Request a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation
- Request a copy of a voided check. This will also give you
their bank information. - Request a copy of a voided contract or invoice
Obtaining any or all of these documents clarifies the type of entity you are dealing with, whether that is a corporation, a LLC, or a partnership, etc. Know your customers and ask the right questions from the beginning of your business relationship.
