DAVE'S SKILL BUILDER

Catching a Mooring Ball

The easiest way to catch a mooring ball is not to approach it head on, but to back up to the mooring ball stern first. Most sterns have boarding ladders or transom steps that make it easier to hook a line from a mooring ball -- just make sure to hang on to the boat!

As the helm backs up to the mooring ball, walk your mooring line back to the cockpit, keeping the line outside the shrouds. Use a boat hook to snag the mooring pennant or mooring ring, tie your mooring line to the mooring ball's ring, then have the helm move away from the mooring ball. Watch to make sure you don't drive over your mooring line and get it wrapped in the prop!

Basic Keelboat and Basic Cruising Courses

The Basic Keelboat Course will prepare you to confidently sail 25-foot basic sailboats that have a ballasted keel, tiller steering and an outboard auxiliary engine. Experience the thrill, freedom and fun of sailing on your own for the day! Our Basic Keelboat course will teach you the basic elements of sailing including terminology, boat setup, wind direction and points of sail, sail trim, tacking, jibing, reefing and more! You'll also learn close quarter maneuvering, docking, anchoring, navigation rules, and crew overboard recovery. The skipper-level course is 24 hours (three eight-hour sessions) and is designed to have each student complete the course, earn the US SAILING BASIC KEELBOAT BK bookcertification, and start day sailing on our fleet of 22-foot Catalina Capri sailboats.

Building on the skills and experiences learned in Basic Keelboat, the successful student is now ready to advance to larger and more comfortable cruising sailboats! The Basic Cruising Course will expand your knowledge and includes more time spent docking, maneuvering, learning large boat systems and boat handling. Enjoy sailing larger vessels with friends and family while expanding your day trip possibilities. This class is taught on our larger sloop-rigged cruising sailboats with wheel steering and an inboard engine. The course includes 24 hours (three eight-hour sessions) of instruction.

We have the friendliest instructor-student ratio in the industry: one instructor for every three students in Basic Keelboat, and one instructor for every four students in Basic Cruising. Sign up today and realize your sailing dreams!
