January 2013

Dana E. FriedmanGovernor Cuomo announced in his State of the State on January 9th that he will "propose a robust full-day pre-kindergarten program for the Empire State that is targeted toward our highest need students in the lowest wealth districts and funded via a grant process limited to effective, research-based early learning models." We are to be grateful for this mention in the State of the State, which is of great significance. Pre-K has connected many children and their parents to the school, and helped ease an important transition. But pre-K is only part of the system that prepares children for Kindergarten. I hope this critical endorsement of early childhood education, even more passionately stated by the Governor's Educational Reform Commission, can lead to a discussion of how we build a better system relying on those in the community who have been doing this work for 50 years.

Westbury's Nature's Outdoor Classroom

EYI's Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids (LINCK) is capturing ideas from the community about the design of an outdoor classroom at Bunky Reid Park in Westbury.  This all natural outdoor play space stimulates learning, physical activity and the use of all five senses.  The need for it is supported by the findings from the Early Development Instrument used to measure Kindergarten readiness of Westbury children. Thanks to a recent grant from TD Bank Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank and support from the Town of North Hempstead and Westbury SChool Alumnus, a legacy will be created for future generations to play, explore, learn and grow.

Building a Children's Library at the Westbury Yes We Can Center!

Reading is the foundation of learning for every child in order to be ready to succeed in school and life.  The New Cassel Yes We Can Center will soon have a children's library thanks to a recent grant from the Nassau Bar Association's WE CARE Fund.  This grant will enable EYI to begin build a library that ensures all children have the resources and opportunities to learn, grow and build essential skills that will help them thrive in school and life.

Enhancing Understanding of Early Education: The Long Island UPK School Leadership Project

With our partners at the Alliance for Childhood and Nassau BOCES, EYI has launched a pre-K coaching project that is being piloted in four communities:  Deer Park, East Islip, Glen Cove and Long Beach.  In addition, we will be convening principals with school-based pre-K programs and pre-K administrators from all districts with pre-K to share research and best practices and create a network of school administrators with responsibility for early childhood education.  Funding for this effort has been graciously provided by JPMorgan Chase and Rauch Foundation.
