Wishing You and Your Family a
Happy Holiday Season!

EYI has been concerned about the impact of Hurricane Sandy on children - a topic that has received little coverage in the media beyond diapers and formula. Over 45 members of our Advisory Committee met on December 6 to discuss the topic with a panel from North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect, NYS Office of Child and Family Service, and Child Care Council of Nassau. The emotional toll on children has yet to be realized and Newsday covered their concerns in an article the next day. What astounded me were the on-line comments submitted to Newsday, which all suggested that addressing children's emotional responses to losing their toys and stuffed animals was foolish. As one person wrote: "Turning children into spoiled, sheltered wimps is far more damaging than losing some toys." Apparently, the problem we raised is bigger than I thought.

Early childhood advocates gave testimony at Long Island's public hearings sponsored by Governor Cuomo's NYS Education Reform Commission on October 11, 2012.  Nancy Douzinas from Rauch Foundation, Danielle Asher from Long Island Progressive Coalition, Dana Friedman from EYI and Robert Kratzke representing America's Edge gave testimony urging that the Commission make early childhood education central to their recommendations in order to improve high school graduation rates.  Douzinas' said, "The Rauch Foundation makes grants of approximately $1.5M every year to improve young children's lives on Long Island and in New York State. We have been doing this for over twenty years and unfortunately, New York State has not been the partner we need." Friedman commented that "educational reform has been occurring for over 30 years and the only thing that hasn't been tried is redefining when education begins."  See the full testimonies in the links below.

Early Development Instrument (EDI)

The Early Years Institute presented the second round of the Early Development Instruments (EDI) data to the Westbury School District and the Westbury Leadership Team in early  December.  EDI is an innovative tool to assess kindergarten school readiness and identify areas of need in five core developmental domains. EYI will be sharing the data with community stakeholders in February of 2013.

Transition to Kindergarten

Thoughtful planning to prepare for the transition to kindergarten can have meaningful results for children that will last well beyond the first weeks of school.  Thanks to a grant from the Angela and Scott Jaggar Foundation, this will be the first year of EYI's efforts to implement this program in Westbury and then replicate it in other school districts on Long Island.
