READY, SET, ACHIEVE!
Partnering with communities to
help young children succeed |
|
The closest our presidential candidates have come to mentioning children in the debates is to make reference to Big Bird - and not in a positive way. Several advocates have taken note in the Huffington Post and other blogs. Sara Mead explains this paucity of debate points regarding children as related to policymakers not buying into the return on investment of early childhood programs and the fact that media hasn't covered the subject. However, a national poll by the First Focus Campaign for Children found that 63 percent of likely voters feel the presidential campaign should increase its focus on children. A majority of voters rejected cuts to Head Start (59 percent) and child care (54 percent). A whopping 82 percent of voters say they want to hear more from the candidates because it will affect their vote. Spread the word...The Early Care and Learning Council has a wonderful Guide for Voters and Candidates to assist them in making informed decisions in regards to the needs of children, their families and the community at large.

Investing in Early Education - Ready, Set, Achieve!
Thanks to the Rauch Foundation, in Garden City, N.Y., The Early Years Institute can begin its multi-year School Readiness Campaign in Westbury in January 2013. When children begin school on the first day and have high quality early childhood education, research shows they have higher reading and math scores, better school attendance rates, and higher graduation rates.

"...I so often hear from business people complaining about the quality of graduates, little knowing that the answer won't be found in the fourth grade or the seventh grade or somewhere in high school. Instead the 'fix' can be found where the most extraordinary return on investment occurs - that is, in the earliest years. Get those years right, and a child probably will have momentum all his or her life."
