Holidays: Strategies for Success
While the holiday season is filled with enjoyable activities, events and traditions, it can also be a hectic and stressful time. Travel, shopping, loud music, bright lights, unfamiliar food, and busy schedules can turn typical routines upside down! The disruption to routine can be particularly difficult for children who
depend on routine and predictability to engage in appropriate behavior.

The Technical Assistance Center for Social Emotional Interactions (TACSEI) has tips to make your holiday less stressful.   The Stategies for Success series has suggestions for other tasks that can create stress such as running errands and bedtime.
RTI Action Network "Ask the Expert"

RTI Action Network has a blog titled, "Ask the Expert"

A recent question focused on student assessment;

"Can you grade a typical student (at either Tier 2 or 3) on a reduced number of problems; provide additional time on assessments; allow for oral responses?'

Read the response from George Batsche, Ed.D., University of South Florida, Tampa or explore other "Ask the Expert" questions.

Preschool Language Improved When Placed With More-Skilled Peers

A recent article in the journal Child Development reviews the finding of research focused on the language development of pre-school children.  Researchers found that children with relatively poor language skills either didn't improve over the course of one academic year, or actually lost ground in development of language skills, when they were placed with other low-achieving students.

The results have important implications because many preschool programs in the United States are targeted to children in poverty, who may exhibit lags in their development of language skills, said Laura Justice, lead author of the study and professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University.

Read the rest of the article and see recommendations made by the researchers on the Ohio State University Research Connections website.

MPACT Parent Mentor Program

MPACT Parent Mentors are available to offer support and guidance to parents of children with disabilities throughout the IEP process.  Parent Mentors are volunteers who receive 24 hours of initial training, ongoing monthly training, and technical assistance from MPACT staff with regard to special education law, the IEP process, conflict resolution, and effective communication.  Their goal is to help parents build a collaborative partnership with the school district so their child may receive an appropriate education. Click here to view the list of current MPACT Parent Mentors.

If your school district has had a MPACT Parent Mentor in attendance at an IEP meeting, please take a moment to complete a brief online survey if you have not already done so.  A separate survey should be completed for each mentor who has provided services to parents in your district.  These surveys assist MPACT and DESE with identifying and addressing areas of success and improvement with the Parent Mentor Program.

For more information about MPACT or if you have questions regarding the status of a Parent Mentor, please contact MPACT by telephone at (800) 743-7634 or by e-mail at info@ptimpact.org.    You can also view the MPACT website at http://www.ptimpact.org.
