January 2016 DIGEST: ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

Can We Move the Needle On Gender Parity in 2016?

2015 was not the year that we expected.

Although we saw our numbers in represented office decline at the state and local level, some of our elected leaders stepped up with renewed efforts to protect women's rights, from improving access to reproductive health care to advancing the equal pay and treatment of women in the workplace. While we saw advancements in the protection of women's equality in CA, we know that these gains were due to the dedicated work of leaders supported by NWPC LA Westside.

NWPC LA Westside works hard to identify strong women who will lead the fight for justice and equality, encourage them to run and support their campaigns for office. We are proud to reflect back on NWPC LA Westside's efforts to support women candidates and elected officials over 2015. A few of our most notable accomplishments include:

  • Endorsing and supporting Lindsey Horvath in her election to West Hollywood City Council and her appointment as mayor
LA Mayor Eric Garcetti Administering Oath to Lindsey Horvath

  • Endorsing and supporting Andra Hoffman and Sydney Kamlager in their successful campaigns for election to the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees

  • Speaking as panelists at Mount St. Mary's University's "Ready to Run" leadership training seminar to develop and train women for political leadership

  • Endorsing and support two women for election to Culver City School Board, Anne Burke and Kelly Kent.

Our biggest accomplishment in 2015 was the launch of another phenomenal 2016 Women's Leadership Calendar celebrating the careers and leadership of some of the most influential and dynamic women in the Los Angeles region and California.

Our sold-out October Gala saw the unveiling of the 2016 Women's Leadership Calendar and kicked off our efforts to raise much needed funds to support women's campaigns in the 2016-2017 election cycles. Calendars are available on our website along with photos from a very fun night.

How Can You Help?
2016 will be a transformative year for women in politics. With the prospect of a strong woman as candidate for President and two women vying to fill the seat of retiring Senator Barbara Boxer, women candidates running for election to offices in down-ticket races are poised to see greater gains. It is critical that NWPC LA Westside remain capable of supporting women candidates at the local, statewide and national level. We do this through the continued support of dedicated members like you. Please consider renewing your membership, or joining today. If you are already a member and are able, please consider making a contribution to our PAC to help us ramp up our efforts to work with women candidates in the 2016 election cycle.  Finally, consider joining NWPC LA Westside at events to train and support women leaders and elected officials throughout 2016. Working together, we can harness the political power of women to achieve equality.
