RDA is Here, Are You Ready?

As of April 1, the Library of Congress and U.S. National Library of Medicine are using now Resource Description and Access (RDA) as their official descriptive cataloging standard. Now that RDA is fully implemented in these national libraries, are you and your organization ready?

Amigos can help.

RDA Toolkit Discounts

Amigos Members are eligible for a 15 percent discount on RDA Toolkit subscriptions. This applies to both solo and site subscriptions. Details are available on the Amigos website.

Training

To help you get trained on RDA, Amigos has scheduled additional sessions of the popular Cataloging with RDA. This eight-hour live online class walks you through the basics of moving from AACR2 to RDA that include:

  • Distinguishing between work, expression, manifestation, and item
  • Building descriptions of resources using RDA Core elements
  • Creating authorized access points using preferred names for persons, families, and corporate bodies, and preferred titles for works
  • Articulating relationships between works, expressions, manifestations, and items and between resources and persons, families, and corporate bodies using RDA vocabularies
  • Using the RDA Toolkit and workflows to identify rules relevant to describing resources and creating access points

OCLC RDA Policy Statement

Effective March 31, 2013, OCLC member libraries may contribute new unique records to WorldCat formulated according to any cataloging code they are currently using. OCLC will not require libraries to use RDA. Libraries may switch to RDA for original cataloging on their own timetable, if they chose to switch at all. Libraries may continue to contribute records to WorldCat formulated according to AACR2 if they wish to do so.

WorldCat continues to be a master record database. This means one master record present in WorldCat per manifestation per language of cataloging. Duplicate records are contrary to WorldCat policy and hinder the work of the cooperative. Separate records for the same manifestation entered for different cataloging codes are not allowed.

Free Classes from Amigos for Preservation Week

President Obama once wrote, "Part of America's genius has always been its ability to absorb newcomers, to forge a national identity out of the disparate lot that arrived on our shores." The memories and treasures of individuals, families, and communities are essential to the record of this process. They contribute to our understanding of history and its participants just as collections in libraries, museums, and archives do. Preservation Week, "Pass It On!" will take place April 22 - 26 for local institutions across the country to celebrate with preservation-themed events in their own communities.

Sponsored by the American Library Association and partners that include the Library of Congress, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, The American Institute for Conservation, Heritage Preservation, and the Society of American Archivists, Preservation Week will highlight collections of all kinds, and suggest simple steps to help you make sure your treasures and memories last a lifetime and are passed on to future generations.

Amigos Imaging and Preservation Field Service (IPS) will be offering a series of free webinars to celebrate Preservation Week.
