Our Mission:  Build Networks, Inspire Leadership, Drive Business Success and Ignite Passion

President's Message

Hello HRMA members,

May sure has gotten off to a wet start with snow, hail and rain all over the state. Personally, I'm excited for the precipitation because my lawn finally looks green and the flowers are starting to come in nicely. I hope your spring is moving along well and stay tuned for the exciting summer we have planned.

There is still plenty of time to join us in Las Vegas, NV for this year's SHRM Annual Conference. You can expect some great workshops and sessions for all levels of HR professionals. There are some amazing speakers on tap including:

  • Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg
  • Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski
  • Author and Leadership expert Marcus Buckingham
  • Dr. Mehmet OZ of Television fame
  • American Idol and Academy Award Winner Jennifer Hudson will perform on Tuesday evening.

It's shaping up to be a fantastic event. Go here for more information:

Business leadership has changed over recent decades. We now live and work in a global economy, in which geographic borders are virtually non-existent, and innovation, agility and strategy are critical success factors. The HR profession operates at the core of this global economy, ensuring the alignment of organizational strategy with a high-performing workforce.  Two new certifications, SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), demonstrate who we are as HR professionals, what we do and why it matters. These professional certifications are meant to benefit the individual, the profession and the employer. They can open doors for professional advancement, serve to harmonize standards with changing expectations and signal to employers advanced professional development. We believe SHRM certification will become the new standard for HR professionals around the globe. Please visit http://www.shrm.org/certification/pages/default.aspx for more information and stay tuned to this newsletter for information regarding HRMA's fall study classes.

We would again like to thank everyone who brought gently used items for the Barrett House to last month's meeting. This will be an ongoing project and we will have donation boxes at every luncheon this year. Don't forget we will take costume jewelry and other items to help the ladies dress for success. We're also looking forward to our upcoming events with them.

Sincerely,

Brian Stone, PHR

Monthly Member Luncheon April 21, 2015

Topic: Leadership Lessons from the Performing Arts

Skill, talent, practice, constant change and improvement, and teamwork - these are all elements of leadership success in the performing arts.  No performer stands along.  It takes all the right people doing all the right jobs in a seemingly effortless way to assure good performances.  This interactive and engaging presentation will draw upon stories of leadership lessons observed from the performing arts - how the conductor brings harmony to the team by listening, being flexible and changing to meet new requirements, or how a leader works as a producer, director and more to bring out the energy and passion of team members.

Speaker:

Prior to starting the GEMS Group in 2000, she served in a senior HR leadership role with CSC.  An active volunteer with National SHRM, Cornelia's held a number of leadership positions including serving on its National Board of Directors. Her expertise provided her the opportunity to testify before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  Cornelia is also co-author of two books on affirmative action.

What makes you passionate about HR?  I love every part of the employee life cycle, I love that we get to be such an integral part of each and every employee within the company. We give them hope as they start a new career with our organization, we give them structure through the performance improvement process, and we give them a shoulder when their life isn't working out as planned

If you had a super power, what would it be?  Pause Time, sometimes life moves very fast, it would be nice to enjoy the moment.

The movie version of your life should be titled? A League of their own.

One thing people are surprised to find out about me is?  I ran in my 1st marathon when I was 12.

A great vacation was and why? My boyfriend and I went to Chicago to watch our favorite football team, the Chicago Bears. We spent several days enjoying the city and culture. We were even more excited when they won!

The best HR career advice I've received.   Ask questions, never take anything at face value.
