Our Mission:  Build Networks, Inspire Leadership, Drive Business Success and Ignite Passion

President's Message

As spring quickly approaches we welcome the warmer days and dread those darn New Mexico winds. Spring time is a time for rejuvenation, reevaluation and of course spring cleaning. These concepts apply to your HR office as well as your home. Take the time this month of review your I-9 compliance, to catch up on filing that's piled up or if you're really motivated maybe conduct an audit of your HR practices.

We'd like to thank SHRM NM for putting on a very informative Legislative Conference, the speakers and topics we're very informative and I'm sure everyone learned quite a bit. We can't wait to see what next year's State Conference holds. Speaking of conferences; this year's SHRM national conference will be held in Las Vegas, NV. SHRM is in need of volunteers to assist with putting on the conference. So, if you're willing to help out a little, you can get a great discount off your admission price. Click here for more details.

Our March luncheon will feature Claudia Lucas who will speak to us about: Changing Work Styles to be Healthier.  This should be an exciting discussion about work spaces and how we can make changes to our work environment that could lead to us being healthier.

Sincerely,

Brian Stone, PHR

What makes you passionate about HR?  Like many people I sort of fell into the HR field. I think the reason I stayed is underneath it all, HR is about helping people.  Whether you're helping employees, helping a leader make their organization more efficient or just lending an ear when its needed, nothing feels quite as satisfying as knowing you were able to make a contribution and help someone else.

If we could bottle your personality, what would the label read?
Well, when I was reading these questions to my husband he answered "feisty" but I don't think that's really what we're going for here. So I'd say innovative, driven, resourceful, thoughtful and witty with a dash of sarcasm

The movie version of your life should be titled? This is a hard one....how about "I Loved (Mostly) Every Minute."  With a title like that it would probably be a late night Hallmark movie.

One thing people are surprised to find out about me is? This question always stumps me. I guess I'd say that I have a goat in my backyard.  He's a Nigerian Dwarf, his name is Edwin and he thinks he's a dog.  Goats are really underrated. They're really neat pets except their eyes are a little creepy.

A great vacation was and why?  Mexico City.  We had never been there before so it was all very interesting.  We toured the Teotihuacn pyramids the first day (don't ask me to pronounce that), and they were breathtaking.  The next morning my husband went out for a run near our hotel downtown and came across a wonderful bakery tucked away in a beautiful courtyard. He came back and got me and we had coffee and pastries by an old stone church with a beautiful garden.  I don't know why but it was really surreal.

The best HR career advice I've received.  Don't make your frying pan too small.  I know, it's a weird one but it means don't limit yourself.  If you set your sights too small you might miss out on wonderful opportunities.
HRMA members are invited to be featured in NTYMY (Nice To Meet You).  The profile of a member selected at random from those who volunteer will appear in the newsletter.  Send an "I volunteer" email now.
