Pr esident's Message Dear HRMA Friends and Colleagues: Fall is truly in the air, when green chiles are roasting and plans are brewing for the state fair and yes, my favorite, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta - wow! Where has the time gone! It gives me great pleasure to welcome Gabe Campos, Human Rights Officer for the City of Albuquerque, to our September luncheon. as our keynote speaker. Gabe has been a strong supporter of HRMA and has been a very engaging guest facilitator at many of our study groups Gabe Campos was appointed by Mayor Berry in July 2013 as the CAB Human Rights Officer. Gabe earned his Law degree from the University of Wisconsin and is currently working on his MBA. Gabe's community activities have also included: - Director of the Family Safety Division of New Mexico Legal Aid since 2003.
- Chief of Staff for the 11th Judicial District Attorneys office in Gallup.
- Serves on the board of the New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Provider
- Appointed to the NM Parole Board and the NM Intimate Partner Violence Death Review Team.
And there are so many more organizations in the city and state that Gabe has lent his knowledge and expertise to - as well as his dry sense of humor! Please join us Tuesday, September 16th at the Sheraton Uptown for our 11:30 luncheon. I look forward to seeing you there. September is a busy month for HRMA. Along with our normal meeting, we are delighted to welcome Scott Ferrin, the Director for the Southwest Central SHRM to discuss the many aspects and field the many questions that we all have regarding the new SHRM competency certifications. I was quite impressed with Scott's presentation at the recent SHRM State Council quarterly meeting and am delighted that he will be joining us for an EVENING reception. The event will be held: Monday, September 29, 2014, 5:30 - 7 pm at the Sheraton Uptown. Cost: $5 and will include a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres. Make sure to mark your calendars. And don't forget about Celebrate HR. This event is being held statewide and sponsored by the SHRM State Council on Saturday September 20th. Please contact Jessica Edlinger, our Certification VP for more at information at certification@hrmanm.org And just a little preview of coming events - we are so pleased to be welcoming Lisa Horn to our October meeting from SHRM national. Lisa is the Director of Congressional Affairs for SHRM and she will be addressing the topic of workforce flexibility. It is going to be very interesting to hear what the trends are in this area and what impact the recession had in this area. And it will also be good to introduce her to the uniqueness of our community. She has spoken with us before and we are always so very delighted to have her back. More details to come but this presentation should earn strategic business management credit for HRCI - always a bonus! So I look forward to seeing you all throughout the month of September and welcoming Fall to our great city! HR Quote for the Month from Malcolm Gladwell "...If you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires. Regards, Barbara

SEPTEMBER MEMBER LUNCHEON
Human Rights, Diversity and ADA
Speaker: Gabe Campos
Mr. Campos is the Director of the Office of Diversity, Human Rights and ADA for the City of Albuquerque. City Ordinance specifies the breadth of the Office of Diversity and Human Rights as a visible entity to address discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, and physical handicap in areas such as housing, employment and public accommodation.
To this end, the office is actively working on cases related to citizen issues as well as broader initiatives related to pay equity, ADA, and housing. The office does not provide legal representation but instead engages in pre litigation strategies to proactively assist citizens.
Mr. Campos received his BS in engineering from NMSU, his MBA from UNM and his Doctor of Law from the University Of Wisconsin School Of Law. Prior to his current role as the Human Rights Officer, he was with New Mexico Legal Aid, the District Attorneys' Office, Westinghouse Electric and General Motors. Throughout his career he has been actively engaged in the community by volunteering to serve on the boards of various social services agencies, especially those focusing on assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking or to those with mental health concerns.
