Memorial Day is more than just a great excuse for a cookout and a day off from work. The holiday was created to honor the many American men and women who died in military service. This focus on those who made the ultimate sacrifice sets it apart from Veterans' Day, which honors all military veterans, living and dead.

The day was originally set aside to remember Union soldiers who died during the Civil War, but following World War I, its scope expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. At the end of the Civil War, many U.S. cities held their own memorial observations for their hometown heroes. The idea for a specific holiday came in 1868 from Illinois Senator John Alexander Logan, a former Union general and keynote speaker at one early observation. Logan used his position as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Union soldiers, to issue a proclamation for a national "Decoration Day" to be observed on May 30 of that year by decorating the tombs of Union soldiers.

Beginning about 15 years later, an alternate name, "Memorial Day," started cropping up from to time to time. The new name became more common after World War II, and in 1967 was declared the official name by Federal law. Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 until 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, moving four holidays - Columbus Day, Presidents' Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day - to designated Mondays in order to create the ever-popular three-day weekends. (Veterans Day eventually reverted to its traditional Nov. 11 date, which mirrors Armistice Day celebrations in several European nations).

I hope that you were all able to take a moment yesterday or over the weekend to remember those who have paid the ultimate price to keep our country free.

Have a wonderful week!

Path to Leadership at De Pere at Dawn

De Pere's Premier Morning Networking Event Goes Personal! The Personal "Path to Leadership" that is! Are you are an emerging, high potential or mid-level leader from any private, public, or not-for-profit organization wishing to understand and enhance your personal leadership style so that you can improve your overall performance?  Are you a business owner or manager with promising staff?  Many business owners and managers give little thought to staff education. They do not think it is part of their role, or if they do, they never have time to get around to it or have a "large enough" budget for it.  If you have not given staff development much thought or think it does not affect your practice or patients, this article is for you. You have an important role in staff development: establishing its priority, encouraging it by example, and supporting it in your attitude and budget. The truth is that if staff education and development are not a priority for the owners and managers, they will not be a priority for anyone under them.

The DPACC Summer Path to Leadership Series presented by Wisconsin Public Service is a cost-effective, time-respectful program. 90 minutes a month for 2 months and early in the day to interfere very little with your business day.  2 topics will be covered each month.

US 41 Project Lane Closures May 19-23

Drivers should anticipate various overnight single lane closures on southbound and northbound US 41 along the entire Brown County corridor from south of Glory Road to Lineville Road. Lane closures can vary along the corridor, so drivers are urged to stay alert, pay attention to road signs, slow down and use caution when entering any work zone. The US 41 Project plans to have at least one lane of traffic open at all times on both northbound and southbound US 41 during construction. This does not include closures by local authorities for accidents or unusual incidents (such as weather).
