Community News

Groundbreaking was held Thursday, October 3rd to begin construction on an upgraded emission control system at the Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) 321-megawatt Weston 3 coal-fired electric generating power plant near Wausau, Wisconsin. WPS and Hamon Research-Cottrell (HRC) will design, construct and install the new, multi-pollutant control system at Weston Unit 3 using Regenerative Activated Coke Technology, or ReACT™. URS Corporation was selected to support WPS by providing additional engineering and the site construction management team.

The initial announcement of the project was in May of 2012 and the project was approved by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin in April of this year. The project will bring more than 200 construction jobs to central Wisconsin for about 3.5 years. View full news release here.

Autumn is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, finish up that summer project or drive stakes for snow fencing. Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) reminds everyone to first call 8-1-1 to contact Diggers Hotline in Wisconsin and Miss Dig in Michigan before any projects involving digging begins. Diggers Hotline and Miss Dig are coordinated, one-call centers that were established to keep everyone safe. WIAA is coming to town!  The WIAA Girls State Volleyball Tournament will be at the Resch Center November 7-9, 2013.  This tournament is a great event for the Green Bay area, and WIAA loves the warm welcome these tournaments receive from our community.  This year, there are a number of great ways for you to show your support! With the heating season upon us, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) reminds qualified low-income customers there are dollars available to help with heating bills. The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) administers the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP and its related services help approximately 225,000 Wisconsin households annually. View full news release here.

On Thursday, November 7, at 8 a.m. Central time, Integrys Energy Group, Inc. (NYSE: TEG) will host a conference call to review third quarter 2013 financial results, as well as future prospects. Third quarter 2013 financial results documents will be posted to the company's website after market close on November 6, 2013. Sustainable Gardening Series: Ground Preparation

Learn the steps you can take this fall to prepare your garden for the 2014 growing season.  Classes are taught by Heather Marchant, flower farmer and local florist. Heather is a former teacher who began her flower farming adventure with her family in 1999 when they established Heatherbrook Farm. Their farm has become one of the finest flower farms in the area, and Heather is excited to share what she has learned about sustainable farming. All classes are complimentary, and are held at Forget-Me-Not Florist in De Pere.

De Pere Farmer's Market

Our market is a place for business and trade while at the same time fostering social gathering and community activity. Our festive atmosphere provides a relaxing and even entertaining place to shop and meet with friends. Our Farmers' Markets are a direct marketing outlet for farmers and small vendors. It brings additional activity into our public space and helps family farmers, preserve agriculture, provide high-quality fresh produce to consumers in towns and cities, and increase activity in downtown areas. Most important, they are fun!

Africa Hope Run

5K & 10K Run/Walk All race proceeds will be used to help build an elementary school for the poor of Funsani, Malawi, Africa. The ongoing Orphans of God project in Malawi is sponsored by Aquaid Lifeline (UK) and Spring Lake Church.

Saturday: 
Halloween Event at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary: 6-8:30pm. Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, 1660 East Shore Drive, Green Bay. Indoor Halloween hikes every 20 minutes. Local students dress as animals (bat, owl, mosquito, moth, skunk) and describe the daily lives of the creatures they represent. $3.75 ages 13 and older, $2.50 ages 12 and younger. US 41 Project Lane Closures October 14-18


Drivers should anticipate overnight single lane closures on southbound and northbound US 41 along the entire Brown County corridor from south of Scheuring Road to Lineville Road. Lane closures can vary along the corridor, so drivers are urged to stay alert, pay attention to road signs, slow down and use caution when entering any work zone. The US 41 Project plans to have at least one lane of traffic open at all times on both northbound and southbound US 41 during construction. This does not include shutdowns by local authorities for accidents or unusual incidents (such as weather).

Oneida Street

Drivers can expect overnight closures on northbound US 41 on and off-ramps at Oneida Street from Monday, October 14th through Friday, October 18th from 7pm to 6am, for sewer installation. In addition, drivers can expect various lane closures on eastbound and westbound Oneida Street under US 41 throughout the week from 7pm to 6am.

WIS 172

Throughout the week, westbound WIS 172 between Ashland Avenue ad Babcock Road wil have single lane closures from 6pm to 6am for grading operations. The northbound US 41 off-ramp to eastbound WIS 172 will be closed from Monday, October 14th to Friday, October 18th from 6pm to 6am for sewer installation. The following detour will be in place:


Northbound US 41 traffic seeking eastbound WIS 172 will be detoured off at Ashland Avenue, take Ashland Avenue north to Vanderperren Way, follow Vanderperren Way west to the eastbound WIS 172 entrance ramp.


In addition, the westbound WIS 172 ramp to southbound US 41 will be closed Monday through Friday from 8pm to 6am for bridge demolition. The following detour will be in place:


Westbound WIS 172 traffic seeking southbound US 41 will be detoured north on US 41, exit at Lombardi Avenue, take Lombardi Avenue west to southbound US 41 on-ramp and follow southbound US 41 to westbound WIS 172.


WIS 29


Eastbound and westbound WIS 29 between County J and Taylor Street will have various lane closures Monday through Wednesday fro 6pm to 6am. On Monday, October 14th, there will be a full closure of northbound US 41 at the WIS 29 tamps from 10pm to 2am for bridge work. Northbound US 41 traffic will be detoured off at WIS 29, cross WIS 2 and re-enter northbound US 41 using the on-ramp.

There will be a full closure of the northbound US 41 off-ramp to WIS 29 on Tuesday, October 15th from 2am to 6am. The following detour will be in place:

Traffic seeking eastbound WIS 29 will exit at Mason Street, take Mason Street east to Military Avenue, follow Military Avenue north to WIS 29.

Traffic seeking westbound WIS 29 will exit at Mason Street, take Mason Street west to Packerland Drive, follow Packerland Drive north to WIS 29.

On Wednesday, October 16th, from 10pm to 1am there will be a full closure of westbound WIS 29 at US 41 for bridge demolition. Traffic will be detoured as follows:

Westbound WIS 29 traffic will take northbound US 41 to Velp Avenue, take Velp Avenue west to southbound US 41 and follow US 41 to WIS 29.

Drivers can expect single lane closure on northbound and southbound Packerland Drive under WIS 29 on Monday through Friday from 6pm to 6am. In addition, there will be a full closure of Memorial drive under US 41 on Monday from 6pm to 7am and on Tuesday from 6pm to 10pm.

Lineville Road

Drivers can anticipate full overnight closures of the northbound and southbound US 41 ramps at Lineville Road on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9pm to 5am.

I-43/US 41 Interchange

Drivers can anticipate a full closure of the northbound I-43 ramp to northbound US 41 on Monday, October 14th through Friday, October 18th from 8pm to 5am. Traffic will be detoured as follows:

Northbound I-43 traffic seeking northbound US 41 will be using the Leo Frigo alternate route on Velp Avenue and follow Velp Avenue west to US 41.

There will also be a full closure of the northbound US 41 to southbound I-43 on Monday through Friday from 8pm to 5am. Traffic will be detoured as follows:

Northbound US 41 traffic seeking southbound I-41 will take Velp Avenue east.
