From the Executive Director
 | | Dave Feldman |
Water is vital to all life on our planet. Consider the following: - 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water but less than 1% is drinkable.
- The Chesapeake Bay watershed consists of more than 100,000 streams, creeks and rivers; 18 trillion gallons of water; 11,600 miles of shoreline; goes through 6 states and the District of Columbia; and is home to 17 million people.
- A typical individual in the United States uses 70 gallons of water each day. Over 1 billion people worldwide use less than 1.5 gallons of water per day.
- On average, women in Africa and Asia have to walk 3.7 miles to collect water
On June 15, Bethesda Green and partners Mark Leisher Productions and Journeys Crossing will hold the Reel Water Film Festival at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. The event is not meant to depress but inspire. We look to inform our audience about what is taking place in the world, our country, our communities and even in our own homes. And we look to entertain. The documentary movement is growing everywhere and film stands at the crossroads of culture, somewhere between journalism, narrative and television entertainment. We selected the best short films out of more than 60 nominated and will be showing Chasing Ice as our feature. From local to global, conservation to management, the films show how water is far more precious than many of us understand. One of the festival's goals is to raise funds for water local and global projects. Some funds raised will help pay for water filtration systems and sanitation programs for communities needing access to clean drinking water. Other funds will be used to protect the Chesapeake Bay, supporting various storm-water management projects. Water is the story. Film is the medium. We hope you join us to watch some amazing films June 15. |

Incubator Spotlight
Joyful Bath Co. -- Luxuriously Sustainable
by Susanna Parker
Rochel Roland is firm in her belief that taking a bath is one of the best ways to relax your body and mind. The founder of Joyful Bath Co. has had a life-long love affair with hot baths but was always disappointed by the bath products available. Some had too much fragrance, others left an oily residue, and all were filled with unnatural chemicals. Rochel began creating her own formulations mixing organic salts, pure essential oils and healing food-grade ingredients, unlike any other bath products on the market. That's when she realized she'd found her niche, and Joyful Bath Co. was born. More >>
