From the Executive Director
 | | Dave Feldman |
April is one of my favorites times of year. NCAA final four, transition from winter to spring and Earth Day. It's the time when those in "green" fields are high in demand. Even after 43 years and almost daily news decrying the woes of our planet, Earth Day serves a vital role. It's both an opportunity to celebrate the planet and raise awareness about protecting it. Earth Day (and the weeks before and after) generates dialogue about important issues that affect us all: waste and recycling; food and health; clean water; energy creation and consumption; city planning and design; community development. It reminds us that our Earth supports great diversity and we need to conserve our natural resources for future generations. Earth Day also highlights our need to work together in our own neighborhoods and region. There are many grassroots programs around the area from creek cleanups, (litter and invasive species removal), to shredding and recycling events. Local groups offer education on a variety of topics and mobilize around relevant campaigns. Please look for something in your area or start your own. A great resource is the Earth Day Network's website, which offers suggestions for "Billion Acts of Green." Bethesda Green is a partner in the Reel Water Film Festival, which is a great example of a local event making an impact in our community and worldwide. By using film as the medium, the 2nd annual festival helps viewers understand the importance of water and its relevance in our daily lives. Earth Day is just one day but a reminder for how we should act all year. Please do your part to protect the environment. It's our future. Enjoy spring. Congrats Louisville Cardinals Men and UConn Huskies Ladies. |

Incubator Spotlight
Montgomery County Food Council:
Creating a Sustainable Food System
by Jennifer Roe
Montgomery County is home to one of the nation's most renowned agricultural reserves -- 93,000 acres of land, making up nearly one-third of the county.
But is this local, regional, and national treasure being maximized to address the increasing demand for healthy, fresh, affordable local food, the potential for new, profitable farm enterprises, and more? Is Montgomery County doing as much as it can to support the creation of new food enterprises, promote healthy eating, and end hunger in our community?
According to the Montgomery County Food Council, the answer is not yet. More >>
