Bethesda Green intro video

From the Executive Director
Dave Feldman
Dave Feldman

Happy birthday Bethesda Green!

Five years ago, some visionary community leaders had an idea for an organization that would help to green the downtown Bethesda business district. Bethesda Green was launched, blossomed throughout local neighborhoods, and became a model for other communities in the area.

Now that we have reached a noteworthy numerical milestone, it is a good time to take stock and consider our future path.

Our Gala theme this year was "The Sky is the Limit." With a strategy based on a three-pronged approach -- incubate, educate, initiate -- we continue to feel there are unlimited opportunities for this organization to make a difference both locally, regionally and even around the world.

While we focus on our Green Business Incubator, Fields of Green Internship Fair, Solar & Green Home Expo and other programs, we are also expanding and broadening our reach in 2013. We have plans to engage residents, green businesses, restaurants and even real estate developers and builders. Our goal is to educate and inspire changes in daily behavior and business practices.

Our community has grown to more than 7,000 strong through social media and outreach efforts. We have seen our impact spread throughout Bethesda and beyond, inspiring other community green organizations in Montgomery County and around the region.

It is only appropriate to ask you -- what more can Bethesda Green be? How can we make our communities better for residents and businesses? And how can we evolve our organization to promote innovation, collaboration and smart approaches to environmental stewardship and economic vitality.

Over the next six months, we are reaching out to our friends and supporters to get feedback about where you would like us to focus our efforts. We have ideas, but we want yours too.

Change happens locally with the commitment of entrepreneurial, action-oriented, mission-based people. Tomorrow's ideas, some in plain sight and revealed with your help, can lead to an even brighter future for our community.

Thanks for going on this journey with us. We know anything is possible. The Sky truly is the Limit.

Changing the Way We Eat 2013
TEDxManhattan Viewing Party

Bethesda Green was bursting with energy and inspiring conversation this past Saturday, February 16. Community members joined together to watch a live webcast of the TEDxManhattan event "Changing the Way We Eat," held in New York City. Attendees were motivated by speeches discussing innovative ways to change our food system. Among the presenters in New York was Bethesda resident Cheryl Kollin.

Cheryl won the TEDxManhattan challenge for a speaker spot on the day-long program and discussed her Farm-to-Freezer program with thousands of webcast viewers across the country. At Bethesda Green, during the mid-day break in the TEDx program, a delicious pot-luck lunch was enjoyed, followed by a panel discussion of local leaders making a difference in our community's food system.

Montgomery County Food Council chair Cheryl Newman moderated the panel, which included presentations about local farms, food insecurity, green catering, and markets that serve both local farmers and customers.
