Winter Solstice: Long Nights and Short Days
Water Element

Congratulations! We just made it through the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere (December 21st) and the days are gradually getting longer. The season of winter is represented by water in both Traditional Yogic (Ayurvedic) and Chinese Medicine (TCM).

In TCM, Winter regulates the Kidney and Bladder Meridians. The Bladder Meridian runs from the top of the brow, over the crown of the head, down the back, and to the soles of the feet and the 5th toes. The Kidney Meridian starts at the sole of the foot and travels up the inner thighs to the kidney organs. Together, the kidney and bladder organs function to filter and eliminate water in the body.

The Bladder Meridian runs parallel to the spine and the sciatic nerve. In TCM, the sciatic nerve is sometimes called the "life nerve." Flexibility of the spine and the life nerve is crucial to spinal health, and some would say to overall health. Take a moment to imagine an elderly person with an inflexible spine and hamstrings; they would appear hunched over and bent at the knees and hips. Their bodies will not react as quickly as someone with flexible and supple hamstrings and spine. It is easier to respond to physical and emotional demands with flexibility when our body is flexible.

Our muscles and soft tissue will also be more supple when we are hydrated properly. Winter is a good time to hydrate your cells after the windy and dry autumn weather. Drink water now to fill the reservoirs in our body to prepare for Spring.

Do not fear the dark of night and winter. The darkness is a hormonal cue for our bodies to slow down and hibernate. Snuggle into a blanket with some warm tea and rest. Use warming spices, such as clove, cinnamon, and turmeric in your food and eat warmed, seasonal, veggies like greens and root vegetables to nourish your body this time of year. Avoid Cold Foods, Sugar and Excess Salt. Meditate on the image of floating down a river and allowing your innate wisdom to bubble up from within.
