Dear
:

Second quarter rates were just released this past week.  Once again we saw plan design changes and in some cases double digit increases for the small group marketplace.  Large groups (50 employees and over) had less volatility, but are more sensitive to claims experience.  Group health insurance will continue to be a challenge to groups of all sizes.

Its interesting to note that some of the carriers are adding co-payments on top of deductibles for services such as MRI's, outpatient surgery and hospitalization.  Tufts, for example has revamped their standard Advantage Deductible plans to more of a hybrid plan with the deductible only applying to hospital and lab work, while outpatient, Emergency and MRI's are a higher co-pay only.  We will review your specific plan design changes at next renewal.

Check out the box below on Blue Cross' new plan feature for all renewals in 2016.  They have added TeleHealth to try and cut down on visits to the Emergency Room. TeleHealth will benefit all size groups so be sure to review.

Given the continued increase in premiums, once again we will mention the Massachusetts Wellness Credit. Congratulations to our groups who made the choice to take advantage of the credit and implement steps towards making a healthier workforce.

If you have any questions please send us an e-mail.   Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone you know who owns a business.

Sincerely,

As we drive around the State, we notice more and more Urgent Care Facilities in all parts of Massachusetts. These are positive developments since the cost of urgent care is far less then an Emergency Room which ultimately helps lower the cost (premiums) to provide health insurance for your employees.

EvenTarget is now in the urgent-care game, as its California stores have joined forces with Kaiser Permanente to offer urgent care services in-store.  The retail giant is in good company, as CVS, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, Walgreens and even Whole Foods have also started or planned a "major expansion" of their clinical health services.

Now for the newest development, health services via the internet and/or telephone.    Check out latest from Blue Cross of Massachusetts, Telehealth which will be added for no cost at renewal.   Even has an application to download for your cell phone.

Zenefits crashing and burning

Last night we picked up our daughter after a 6th grade dance and proceeded to watch three girls sit in a booth with heads buried in their cell phones at the local Friendly's.  Fortunately when the ice cream came they put their phones down and actually made conversation.  Have you heard about Chick-Fil-A cell phone challenge??

What does this have to do with Zenefits?  Technology is a great thing, but there is no replacement for actual human interaction.    Zenefits is a start-up  business funded with hundreds of millions of dollars.  They basically wants to sell / takeover your health insurance by providing a free I-cloud HR platform.

It all sounds good on paper until an employer actually has a question on benefits and needs a live person to help them.  The list of complaints is too numerous to list here but here is the latest news we can find from Vanity Fair.

The bottom line is that technology works best when accompanied by a professional in their line of business.  There is no replacement for a knowledgeable individual who finds a solution and resolves problems.
