We are seeing more stories around the country as people realize the cost of healthcare will increase as the Affordability Act is implemented.   The latest one from Ohio, Forbes article, calls for an increase in the individual marketplace between 55% to 88%.    
  
Before the Commonwealth of Massachusetts adopted Healthcare Reform there was talk about how exchanges would allow employers & individuals to be able to purchase insurance at incredible rates.  That did not happen.   If you have a law that requires coverage on everything without pre-existing condition exclusions, unlimited lifetime maximums, and corresponding low penalties not to participate, rates are going to increase dramatically. 
  
Even in California, where we read a story that rates would drop, they are actually slated to go up 64% to 144%, click here for Forbes story.    Key line   "One of the most serious flaws with Obamacare is that its blizzard of regulations and mandates drives up the cost of insurance for people who buy it on their own."

Walmart - Not just RX for Employees! 

 

We continuously tell our clients about the benefits of Generic Drug Opportunities like Walmart, Target , etc.  At Walmart, the list of generic drugs continues to expand.  A 30 day prescription costs $4, while a 90 day mail order will only cost $10.   Admittedly they do not have every single prescription, but their list gets longer every day.

Domestic Partner
  
Employers have the discretion to include the Domestic Partner Rider to the group medical policy.  There is no charge for this.  Although there may be no additional cost from the carrier, the employer may have additional costs when a single employee adds his or her domestic partner and now becomes a family plan.
 
In addition, the employee needs to provide additional documentation to support the request.   Check out the Blue Cross questionnaire here.  All the other carriers have a similar form that must be completed in order to add domestic partner.  Keep in mind this can not be added selectively.  If you decide to add domestic partner as a rider to your plan, all employees are eligible. 
  
Lastly, due to Massachusetts Healthcare Reform, the maximum  number of hours for eligibility for health insurance is 35 hours and the employer contribution needs to be the same for all employees.  The only option to have a different employer contribution level for different employees is if you base the employer contribution on years of service - similar to the vesting schedule you may use on a 401k Plan.

Group Life and Short-term Disability Insurance - Actual Case

 

We recently had a group of ten employees where a key employee became very sick.  Workers Compensation provided no benefits, since it was not work related. The only way the employee could receive a paycheck would be through a short-term disability plan.  The Key employee was out of work four months and received no compensation, other then accumulated sick days.   Pricing for group short term disability is very reasonable.  Check out the quote for a "starter plan":

Part-time employees  (at least 20 hours)

Total Monthly Premium is only $180.  The employer wanted employees to pay something to value the benefit, so it cost them $2 per week.  The cost to the company will be approximately $95 per month.
