January: National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Please join the CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities in commemorating National Birth Defects Prevention Month during January 2013! There will be activities throughout January that will highlight the latest information about birth defects as well as feature stories of families and people affected by these conditions. The focus this year is on raising awareness of birth defects and sharing the message that they are Common, Costly, and Critical. Sandy Hook Recovery Resources

NACCHO extends its deepest sympathies to those affected by the school shooting in Newtown, CT and joins families and communities across the country who are coping with the shock of this traumatic event.

Local health departments prepare communities for disasters and respond when emergencies occur. They also work closely with community partners such as school boards, school nurses and psychologists, mental health professionals, and social workers to recover from a crisis and to prevent future tragedies from occurring. MCH Library Releases Resource Guides about Child and Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

The Maternal and Child Health Library (MCH Library) at Georgetown University presents a new knowledge path, Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents. The knowledge path directs readers to a selection of current, high-quality resources about the prevention, identification, management, and treatment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents in homes, schools, and communities.  Health professionals, program administrators, policymakers, and researchers can use the knowledge path to learn more about overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, improve care, develop programs, and locate training resources and information to answer specific questions.

From CPSC: Deaths Caused by Furniture Tip-Overs

A new report from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows the highest-ever number of television and furniture tip-over deaths recorded by the agency in 2011. According to the CPSC report, 349 consumers (84 percent of them were children younger than age 9) were killed between 2000 and 2011, when TVs, furniture or appliances toppled over onto them. Last year (2011) had the highest one-year number of fatalities reported. Low-cost anchoring devices are effective in preventing these incidents. Parents and caregivers of young children are urged to anchor and stabilize their televisions, furniture and appliances to prevent tip-over related incidents.
