Book of the Month
One good reason to read Love Anthony is to experience the impact autism has on family life. The story takes place on Cape Cod where two women, whose lives have fallen apart, meet. One, a mother of an autistic son who has died at age 5, and the other who turns to writing as her marriage fails. The writer becomes obsessed with capturing the inner experience of an autistic child, giving projected meaning to the repetitive movements associated with autism. It is a beautiful volume, filled with compassion, written by Lisa Genova (Still Alice and Left Neglected). (Simon & Schuster,2013.pap$16) ~Barbara Siepker & Anne Wiesen

Just Arrived!
Readers have had to wait six years for Khaled
Hosseini to write his next novel. Much anticipated, And the Mountains Echoed, will not disappoint. Indeed, I think it is every bit as gripping and poignant as The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. The story begins in Afghanistan in the mid-1940s, with a father telling his son and daughter a cautionary folk tale about the heart-breaking choice a parent has to make to save his family. The next day, the folk tale becomes a reality and sets off a series of events that spread from Kabul to Paris, to the Greek island of Tinos, and to San Francisco. Spanning nearly 70 years, the multi-generational story explores themes of family, identity, betrayal, personal responsibility and sacrifice. Like his previous work, a novel hard to put down and one that stays with you long after the final page. (Riverhead Books, 2013. hdc $28.95)~ Linda Young, our dedicated editor

Priscill a Cogan, Leelanau County author has written a compassionate, healing, and loving novel, Clinging to the Moon , that brings back our two favorite characters: Dr. Maggie C onners and Hawk from the Winona's Web trilogy. This time, though not the main characters, they provide the "glue" by assisting the healing of two physically damaged central characters. Told through effective alternating chapters in their two voices, we are introduced to the inner lives of Tess and Sonny recent arrivals to Traverse City hospitalized at Munson Medical Center. Tess has just emerged from a 40-day coma following a car accident which has left her disoriented with a brain injury. Teaching English with a Ph.D., she has been brought to Traverse City by her husband, but learns upon consciousness that he is divorcing her. Nineteen-year old Sonny has just arrived in Traverse City with dreams of re-uniting with his mother from whom he was orphaned as a child. On the way he picked up a hitch-hiker but while dropping him off he got caught in cross-fire, paralyzing him from the neck down. They are introduced to one another by hospital volunteer, Cassie McDermett, a compassionate woman who sees them as being able to offer each other comfort, even though they seem an unlikely fit. Cassie is a wise, giving person who is suffering from the loss of her husband. Clinging to the Moon is indeed a significant book, taking us into the inner lives and feelings of people dealing with traumatic injuries and the people who work with and advise them. It is a great, intense story fun references to Leelanau County landmarks.
Priscilla Cogan emailed me the file before the book's release and I began reading it on my computer at home, but was so taken by the story that I could not stop, so continued it in the car during a quick trip to Ann Arbor. This has been my closest attempt to reading a book on a reader. I can see its value and I didn't even get a headache. In Ann Arbor, I also understood the concept and value of the Kobe Readers available for re-sale in independent bookstores. Perhaps I can get it together to sell these and eBooks.
