Here April 15th
Loreen Niewenhuis will pick up her World Book Night Books, and speak at a Glen Lake Community Library Program at 7 pm at the Empire Town Hall.
A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Walk:
One Woman's Trek Along the Shorelines of All Five Great Lakes
chronicles Niewenhuis's latest adventure. The book takes the reader on a ground-level walk through the beauty, the history, and the tender ecology of Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, Superior, and Ontario. Like her earlier book of a long trek around Lake Michigan, this new grand hike on the shores of five magnificent bodies of freshwater explores the natural and human history of the Great Lakes . . . and raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend.
(Crickhollow Books 2013. pap $16.95)
Loreen will be happy to sign books for those not able to be here. Click to order. |

We continue to await the arrival of spring. As we greet you this month, patches of snow remain in the woods and the lakes remain frozen. We are hopeful a thaw is on the way.
A new request for book donations: Ella Skocki from Glen Lake School has delivered a decorated box to receive donations of children's books, new or used, for distribution to the Baldwin Center. Glen Lake students will read to the children when they deliver the books.
It is wonderful to have Kathleen Stocking visit again upon her return from the Peace Corps in Romania, and that she continues to write. We are very pleased to announce she has written an essay for the upcoming book, Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Other favorite book enthusiasts are beginning to return to the area, as well.
We are reminded of our mission: to curate the best "real" books available to match the literary interests of our bibliophile customers and to share in the passion for reading. To this end, Barbara has been busy ordering the latest and greatest to have on hand.

Book of the Month
On a small island off the coast of Australia, Tom tends the Light while trying to put four years on the Western front behind him. To this desolate place he brings his young, adored wife Isabel who appreciates the beauty of the land and the Light and accepts the peaceful isolation. However, after two miscarriages and a stillbirth, Isabel is consumed with grief. While tending the newest grave she hears the distant cries of an infant. Tom discovers a boat has washed up in the cove carrying a dead man and a very much alive baby. The decisions they make in the next hours have consequences far beyond their rocky home. You'll enjoy The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman for its compelling characters, lovely descriptive language and fascinating turn of events. (Scribner, 2013. pap $16) ~ Jill Webb

March is Autism
Awareness Month

Insider Benzie/Leelanau (March 24, 2013) included an article by Kristine Morris on autism and the mention of a local doctor who has written a book describing a treatment protocol and lifestyle changes that show promise in the prevention and treatment of autism.
Austism: Prevention, Care and Management by Dr. Marvin D. Anderson of Cedar addresses and explains this complicated medical condition relating to the immune system and associated symptoms in clear concise language. He is a proponent of removing environmental toxins from the body and bolstering the immune system. He also explains why interacting with small animals (such as goats and rabbits) helps bolster the immune system. (G.U.D. Publishers, 2012. pap $19.95)
One good reason to read
Love Anthony is to experience the impact autism has on family life. The story takes place on Cape Cod where two women, whose lives have fallen apart, meet. One, a mother of an autistic son who has died at age 5, and the other who turns to writing as her marriage fails. The writer becomes obsessed with capturing the inner experience of an autistic child, giving projected meaning to the repetitive movements associated with autism. It is a beautiful volume, filled with compassion, written by Lisa Genova (Still Alice and Left Neglected).
(Simon & Schuster,2013.pap$16) ~Barbara Siepker
Twin is a memoir by Allen Shawn of his life as a fraternal twin. It is the story of his twin sister Mary's growing up with autism and his family's attempt to understand and cope with it. Autism in the 1950s, when the twins were babies, was barely a recognized condition. The twin's father, William, was the editor-in-chief of the New Yorker magazine and a public persona. The Shawns did not want their older son, Wallace, and Mary's twin, Allen, to be distracted in their growing up by Mary's bizarre behavior. So Mary was sent to an institution at eight years old. The toll her departure took on Allen lasted a lifetime. Feared by parents, autism is today getting a lot of social and medical attention and much more is understood about its various levels of severity. Shawn has written very openly and tenderly about his and Mary's very different lives in hopes that he may help other families. (Viking, 2012. pap $15) ~Betsy Wagner
