A Student Gives a Special Gift
Greetings!
Something amazing happened in our office a few weeks ago. A graduating senior, Cindy*, owed a significant amount of money to a program the foundation manages. Her parents have struggled financially in recent years and were not able to pay. This caused much stress to the family. Enter high school senior, Linda*, with an envelope filled with cash...the exact amount Cindy needed. Linda obviously earned that money herself since her family has also struggled over the years. She didn't want anyone, especially Cindy, to know what she did. After Linda left our office, I started to think about her act of kindness, her generosity, her gift of friendship. She certainly didn't do it for prestige or recognition. To her, the act of giving was reward enough. That's how I feel when I give, that warm glow knowing that I'm helping to make my world a better place. Thank you, donors, for your gifts. I hope you get as much out of giving as our students get out of receiving. *Names changed

Bequest Awards Excellence in Science
The Watters Science Seminar is a long-standing club that provides opportunities for top math and science students to interact with area medical professionals, researchers, and other scientists on a monthly basis. This year students learned about Materials Science applications in space, product design and manufacturing, solar power in developing countries, and microbial action in wastewater treatment. Each year, the Watters Science Scholarship Committee selects a senior member to receive a $1,500 scholarship. Members of the committee are teachers, alumni, and representatives of Mr. Watters' family. Recipients are selected based on several criteria: GPA, rigor of courses, college and career plans as well as an essay. The essay describes the student's background, interests, and impressions as a member of Watters Science Seminar. This year's winner is 2013 LHS graduate Ellen Latsko, who will be studying Chemical Engineering at Boston University. The Watters Science Seminar was founded in 1959 at LHS by Andy Watters, a popular chemistry teacher. It continues today thanks to a bequest from the Watters family and committed LHS teachers.
The Watters Science Seminar fund is one of several the Foundation manages that provides ongoing support, year after year, for our students. Would you like to learn how you can leave a legacy to the Lakewood City Schools? Contact us at 216.529.4069 or by EMAIL. |

Lakewood Inventors Nab Top Prizes
Lakewood City Schools grabbed three of the top six prizes at the annual Cleveland Regional Invention Convention on May 11, including the Grand Prize. Sydney Heckeler, a fourth-grader at Emerson Elementary, took home the Grand Prize and $2,500. Fifth-grader Evan Bell of Emerson and seventh-grader Damien Jouriles of Garfield Middle School captured first place for their grade levels, along with $500 scholarships. Sydney's invention, "The Hit Free," entails using a small device installed near golf tees that senses if another golfer is too close and in danger of being hit with a swinging club.
