Recipe of the Week
Oat Figs1
  
SPELT AND OAT FIG BARS
Makes 12 Bars

1 Cups Spelt Flour
1 Cups Oatmeal
1 tbsp. Cinnamon
1 tsp Baking Soda
tsp Salt
1 Large Egg
1 tsp. Real Vanilla Extract
tsp. Almond Extract
Cup Brown Sugar
Cup Applesauce
2 tbsp. Butter (to ensure a crisp crumble topping)
1 Cups Fig Preserves (or any other fruit preserves, naturally sweetened)

1. Oven to 350'. In a large bowl, sift all dry ingredients together (spelt flour, 1 cups oats, salt, cinnamon, baking soda ).
2. In a second bowl, whisk the brown sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extracts and applesauce. Add in the dry mixture, and mix to incorporate. It should look like cookie batter at this point.
3. Spray a 8x8 baking pan with cooking spray. Press 2/3 of the mixture into the bottom of the pan. Spread the preserves evenly over the bottom layer.
4. With the remaining mix, add another cup oats and 2tbsp of butter. Mix with your fingers. Crumble it on top of the preserve layer.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is a bit crispy. Let them cool a bit before cutting.

Greetings!

This year marked the 9th and final Grand Teton Races as Grand Targhee.  This year's event included a 50k, Trail Marathon, 10k and Kids Fun Run.  We had some amazing runners this year with both the Marathon and 50k course records being set...what a way to finish!  The 50k winner was Sam Fairleigh at 4:37:30 and the Marathon winner was Chris Lundberg 3:34:52.  Dan Streubel took home the first place award for the 10k at a time of 43:15.

We are so proud of all of the race participants and so very grateful for the wonderful sponsors and race volunteers! And although this year has brought the Grand Teton Races at Grand Targhee to an end, we look forward to the journey and adventures ahead.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?? Oh and by the way,   one hour of OULA  is the equivalent of running 5 miles!!

ATHLETE HIGHLIGHTS

Suzanne Arden

Suzanne Arden competed in this year's John Colter Half Marathon as part of her training plan for the Philly Half Marathon where she will be part of the DOW Corporate Team with her brother.  The highlight of the John Colter Half Marathon for Suzanne was the small town feel of the event and the conversations with the many visitors who came to enjoy our area. She also complimented on the race volunteers and the event organization. Suzanne Arden  
Suzanne also plans to participate in the Tunnel to Towers Race in New Jersey/New York with a team of family members in honor of a relative who died in the Twin Towers.  As a grand finale to her running season she will do the Manasquan Turkey Trot in New Jersey.  She will then return to Teton Valley just in time to hang up her sneakers for the ski season.

Surviving the Long Haul

Carbohydrates are a sufficient source of energy for activities up to 2 hours. For any activity exceeding 2 hours, a protein component should be included with the intake of carbohydrates.

The human body requires protein to sustain extended periods of activity.  If adequate protein intake is not received, your body will begin utilizing the amino acids found in your lean muscle tissue resulting in muscle fatigue and prolonged recovery time.  In addition, inadequate protein intake can suppress the immune system causing greater risk of illness.

Energy gels and select energy chews are a great source of carbohydrates to be used during the first 1 - 2 hours of activity.
