Giving In

May 20, 2013
Greetings!

On Friday the Family Safety Network hosted it's annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.   This event, for most men, is more difficult than competing in the Marathon Des Sables (MDS)!  Just ask Jay.  Struggling to finish the last few steps in his NHL inspired wedge heels, Jay used his MDS experiences to dig deep and push through.  Against all odds, and defying the concept of gravity, Jay managed to finish!

Walk a Mile - Jay ShoesEach year Jay participates in this event to promote domestic violence awareness.  This event also raises funds for the Family Safety Network which provides safety and guidance to domestic violence victims.  To watch a handful of men try to walk a mile in high heel shoes is truly inspiring that in difficult situations anyone can persevere!  What a great message to send to those suffering!

Much Gratitude,

ATHLETE HIGHLIGHT

Tim and Shawn Adams

Tim and Shawn Adams participated in this year's Bloomsday 12k in Spokane, WA.  It is the largest 12k with over 50,000 participants!  The entire course is lined with spectators and bands playing music along the way.  As a child, Shawn lived in Spokane WA., and had always dreamt of one day participating in the Bloomsday 12k.  This year her dream finally came true!  The husband-wife duo had planned to participate last year, unfortunately Shawn had to have knee surgery and was unable to run.  Last year's knee surgery also dictated Shawn's training plan options which could not include running.  Instead she focused on TRX training and attended Dreamchasers fitness classes. Tim trained by running 2-3 times a week.

The couple lined up together at the starting line, but parted ways as the event began. Although their experiences were different, the end result was the same.  They both crossed the finish line happy and strong!  Tim spent his race time high fiving kids along the course, chugging a beer with one spectator and eating chips and salsa with others.   Shawn chose to limbo along the way with some guys dressed as the Washington State University Cougars, and joined in a congo line while a band played Copacabana!

At the finish line where Shawn's parents and Shawn and Tim's boys were waiting and cheering them on, Shawn and Tim joined together once again!

Adams Fam

This was such an amazing experience for the Adams family that they have decided to make it a family tradition.

Thank you Tim and Shawn for sharing your story with us! Your experience at the Bloomsday 12k is a great reminder that the sport of running isn't always about the competition and winning; it can also be all about the memorable experience!

Ask the Coach
Each week we will pick one fitness/nutrition question submitted by you, our clients, and feature it in this section along with an answer to the question.  All questions will be answered by one of our great coaches here at Dreamchasers.  Please indicate if there is a specific coach that you would like your question directed to.

What is ChiRunning?

It is a fact that nearly 70% of runners experience injury every year...don't become a statistic.  Many of these injuries are caused by improper technique.  ChiRunning has helped thousands of runners transform their technique - reducing, preventing, and recovering from injuries.

The main principles of ChiRunning include:
  • Relaxation
  • Correct alignment and posture
  • Using a "gravity-assisted" forward lean
  • Engaging core strength for propulsion
  • Connecting the mind and body to prevent injury

These principles help you to move the way your body was designed.

No matter your experience, level or age, ChiRuning can teach you how to land midfoot to reduce impact, maximize your core while relaxing your legs, use gravity to your advantage and much more.

Recipe of the Week
Granola Peanut Balls
This week's recipe brought to you by jensdelicious recipes.com.

Granola Peanut Butter Balls

Granola Peanut Butter Balls are a simple low cost snack to utilize after workout.  They are quick and easy to prepare.

2 tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons peanut butter
2 cups granola
2 to 4 tablespoons milk, or as needed

In a large bowl, mix together the honey and peanut butter. Using a spatula, stir in the granola. Add enough
milk to just moisten--you want it to stick together. Form into balls. Chill until ready to serve.
