April 6, 2013
Greetings!

....And they are off!  Jay and Julie Bryan have left Teton Valley to pursue the ultimate challenge of the Marathon des Sables. The Marathon des Sables is ranked by the Discovery Channel as the toughest footrace on earth. It is a six-day race through the Sahara desert where midday temperatures can get up to 120 Fahrenheit!  The rules require you to be self-sufficient and to carry everything you need to survive on your back with the exception of water and a sleeping tent.  This will be Jay's tenth event and Julie's first.

Julie's training included running on a treadmill with full gear in our heated Yoga Room to simulate the desert conditions facing her. Jay's training consisted of hours of Hockey play!

Many Blessings,

Lisa & Jay Batchen

ATHLETE HIGHLIGHT

Kate Schade

Kate Schade

Kate Schade is the owner of Kate's, a local manufacturing company providing delicious energy bars made from sustainable organic ingredients. Outside of work Kate can regularly be spotted at Dreamchasers fitness classes or playing in the dirt on her off-road motorcycle.    According to Kate off-road motorcycling is her escape:  "When I am riding it is the only thing I am doing. The mind has no time to wander to other things or you'll crash. You need to be in tune with what your body is doing, and how you are handling the bike. Racing to me takes riding to a new level of challenge. Every time I race, I realize all the things I can do next time to be faster and more efficient. It's like a game, and of course, it's fun and rewarding to win the game!".

Recently Kate participated in two dirt bike races near Boise, Idaho.   The first was a part of the SIDRA series (Southern Idaho Desert Racing Assoc).  Kate took 1st in the Women's A class (74 mile race).  The second race was part of the National Hare and Hound Series where Kate came in 2nd place just 3 seconds behind the leader, after 105 miles!  Kate credits her amazing accomplishments in part to the endurance and core training she receives at Dreamchasers.

Kate's next adventure will take her to Montana where she will participate in the Ought 6 Enduro along with Dreamchaser Tim Burnham.

Amazing work Kate!

Why do Runners Wear Compression Socks/Tights?

Compression garments are the current trend of today's athlete.  Claims in compression technology include reduction in swelling and muscle soreness, improved blood circulation and an increase in performance when worn during activity.

In terms of improving performance during activity, the idea is that if increased blood flow occurs, by-products are transported quickly by the blood and can be flushed out and cleared better. If these by-products that cause fatigue are gotten rid of quicker then performance improves.

Although reports of increased performance are inconclusive, compression has been proven effective in areas of swelling and muscle soreness enabling faster recovery and injury prevention.

Send your questions to: [email protected] with the subject heading "Ask the Coach", then check in next week to see if your question is featured!
Recipe of the Week
Chicken Stir Fry
This week's recipe brought to you by Skinnytaste.com

Spring Stir Fried Chicken with Sugar Snap Peas and Carrots

Ingredients:

For the sauce:
  • 1 tbsp low sodium soy sauce (or Braggs Liquid Aminos or Tamari for GF)
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
For the Stir Fry:
  • 1 lb skinless, boneless chicken breast, sliced thin
  • salt, to taste
  • 1 tbsp rice bran oil, or canola
  • 2 tsp fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 cup sugar snap peas
  • 1 cup carrots, sliced diagonally
  • scallions for garnish
Directions:

Combine soy sauce, lime juice, water and cornstarch in a small bowl, mix together and set aside.

Season chicken lightly with salt. Heat a large wok over high heat. When the wok is very hot, add half of the oil, then add the chicken. Stir fry, stirring occasionally until the chicken is cooked through and browned, about 3-4 minutes. With a slotted spoon, remove the chicken and set aside. Reduce heat to medium.

Add the remaining oil to the wok; add the garlic and ginger, stir for 20 seconds. Add the sugar snap peas and carrots, stirring over medium high heat until tender crisp, about 3-4 minutes.

Return the chicken to the wok, add the soy sauce-lime mixture, mix well and cook another 30 seconds to one minute. Serve immediately and top with fresh scallions.
