Dietary Supplements May Prevent Cognitive Decline
A new study published on May 20 in Environmental and Molecular Medicine reported that dietary supplements containing common vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals appear to prevent the cognitive decline in brain function typically seen in Alzheimer's disease.
The study was performed on a mouse model of accelerated aging and severe cognitive decline.
RESEARCHERS SHOCKED BY RESULTS
The study was led by Dr. Jennifer Lemon a Phd researcher at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. She stated that a supplement combination generally considered to be benign or ineffective in treating anything could have such a profound effect on function.
In addition to deterring cognitive function decline, the supplements also prevented deterioration in sight and smell.
TRANSLATES TO HUMANS
Dr. Lemon went on to state that she is optimistic that these results will translate to humans as well, because "the supplement works on fundamental mechanisms that are pretty much ubiquitous across any organism that breathes air, essentially."
These mechanisms which include oxidative stress, inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, "happen in a multitude of species as they get older" and are not "something that is specifically a human phenomenon that has been attempted to be recreated in a mouse model."
THE TREATED MICE MAINTAINED BRAIN MASS AND BRAIN CELL DENSITY AT LEVELS SEEN IN MUCH YOUNGER MICE, AS WELL AS BRAIN METABOLIC ACTIVITY AND BRAIN PERFUSION.
The supplement also appeared to offset deterioration in visual acuity and sense of smell.
Dr. Lemon also concluded that the benefits of the supplements seemed to be dependent on the combination of supplements as opposed to taking only one or two specific supplements.
This is because the body is so complicated that by taking just one supplement it knocks everything else out of balance.
The supplement combo used in the study was basic vitamins and minerals, plus beta carotene*, bioflavonoids**, cod liver oil, flax seed, garlic and green tea.
How can I help?
My REDDI PLAN for optimal aging is directly in line with the results of this study. Following my Five Step Principles can help anyone become healthier. A Five Step Plan for Optimal Aging
* Beta Carotene are yellow/orange color nutrients commonly found in root vegetables like carrots and radishes.
The human body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A (retinol) - beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A. We need vitamin A for healthy skin and mucus membranes, our immune system, and good eye health and vision. Beta-carotene in itself is not an essential nutrient, but vitamin A is.
** BioFlavonoids are a broad category of nutrients They are compounds abundant in the pulp and rinds of citrus fruits and other foods containing vitamin C , such as soybeans and root vegetables. Other major sources of bioflavonoids include tea, vegetables such as broccoli and eggplant, flaxseed , and whole grains.
