STEPPING OFF A CURB & SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
| |
BY KEVIN REEVE
I have a friend who stepped off the curb and was hit and killed by a vehicle running a red light. He was 40 years old and his life was over in one second. I almost made the same mistake. While in England, I checked for traffic and confidently began to step into the intersection, when my companion yanked me back. I'd looked left instead of right, the wrong direction in a country that drives on the left-hand side of the street. It was a near miss and my companion chided me: "That's why we call you Yanks."

Basic Scout
I am frequently asked to describe the Scout curriculum and especially its relevance to our lives today.
Most primitive cultures had some function or group that was responsible for reconnaissance. This is especially true of hunter-gatherer societies that were constantly on the move. They needed to know that the areas they moved through were clear of enemies, or at least where the enemy was and in what strength.
The skills required of the ancient scouts included the ability to move quietly through the environment, the ability to camouflage one's self, the ability to observe and recall what one has observed, the ability to read the voices of nature, such as birds and insects to learn of the presence of others. Also included were team movement skills, tracking, anti and counter tracking skills, survival skills (no trace survival) and a host of other related abilities.
By utilizing this combination of skills, the scout was able to go before the main body, and alert them as necessary to the presence, strength, and size of enemies, thus allowing them to avoid conflict.
Given that the Apache were able to survive in an extremely hostile environment, when surrounded by so many enemies, it stands to reason that their scouts were exceptionally developed skill wise.
So what do the skills of the Apache Scout have to do with life in today's society? Learning these skills today promotes a tremendous sense of self-reliance. One learns to move in such a way as to minimize their presence, to learn to observe and remember things they encounter. It promotes the ability to think and act as a protector, to not be a victim.
So while the skills of the Scout may seem archaic, they are in fact, very relevant today. How many of us feel that we are safer today than we were ten years ago? How many feel safer as they travel the world? The scout skills of awareness and movement are as relevant today as they ever have been.
Advanced Scout
This course teaches the student how to see, understand, and utilize terrain the way Apache Scouts did. Students will learn how to develop observation and mapping skills that will give them tremendous operational advantages. Students will also learn advanced movement training techniques that will over time greatly reduce their noise and concentric ring signature. They will apply camouflage to Scout shelters (other than Scout pits) and learn to live and move silently and invisibly for extended periods of time.
With over 18 years of wilderness survival educational training, we've created an exceptional and unique event. Sign up for both classes and save $150+. Call to pay. 609-668-5384. Look forward to seeing you in class. - Kevin Reeve

LAND NAVIGATION
Pine Barrens, NJ May 19
| |
Students will learn how to navigate using a map and compass. This decidedly low-tech approach will teach the skills necessary to survive as a Scout without the latest technology.
Students will learn how to follow an azimuth, locate their position, and plan a route. In addition, students will learn survival navigation that will allow them to follow an azimuth without a compass. It is surprising how few people actually know these basic yet invaluable, potentially life-saving outdoor skills.
