WINTER SCOUT/SURVIVAL
St. George, UT FEB 7-9
(Pine Valley,7000 ft.)

In at least 2/3 of the United States,
in a typical winter, cold temperatures and snow provide challenges to survival.
While taking a shortcut (blame it on the GPS) your car stalls or gets stuck on a lonely highway. You experience an equipment failure on a cross country day trip and will be forced to overnight in the forest. You are required to operate tactically in winter weather. Whatever the scenario, being able to understand and adapt to winter conditions will be a lifesaving survival skill.
Winter Scout/Survival will prepare you to deal with the challenges of cold, snowy weather from a survival and tactical perspective.
* How to make winter shelter, water, fire and food
* How to run a trapline
* How to minimize your trail in the snow
* How to actually counter-track in snow
* How to make effective winter camouflage
* How does patrolling change in winter weather?
This is an immersion class. You will be camping and living for two nights and three days. You will make a winter shelter, you will learn how to find dry wood and start a fire in a snowy environment. You will learn how to trap for food. You will learn snow anti and counter-tracking, minimizing your camping footprint to be nearly invisible.

OFF-GRID MEDICAL CARE St. George, UT FEB 6 Pine Barrens, NJ May 19

Off Grid Medical
(Austere Medicine)
Most cities have limited surge capacity in the number of hospital beds available in the event of a disaster. LA County for example has around 90,000 beds total in the entire area. That is servicing a population of 10,000,000 Normally they run at around 70 to 80% capacity. That leaves around 15,000 beds available in time of disaster. How long will it take to for ten million people to fill 15,000 beds?
Most emergency medical training today, EMT or Paramedic training or even much of the tactical medical training, is designed to teach you medical intervention that will keep a patient alive until they reach higher care. Stabilize and transport.
What happens when there is no higher care available? When the grid goes down, how do we provide longer-term care?
How do we diagnose sickness? Treat lacerations, avulsions, gunshot wounds, knife wounds without a doctor? How do we administer IVs or what references should we have for administering medications? What antibiotics should we have? How do we make effective first aid stores for a prolonged grid down scenario.
This is a procedural class. You will learn:
* how to clean wounds
* when and how to suture.
* understand the use of IVs
* how to deal with amputations
* how to deal with crushing injuries
* broken bones, and a host of other procedures
We will be training on animal carcasses to provide maximum realism.
NOTE: The instruction in the class does not certify you to treat anyone when higher care is available. There is no certification, no right to treat a member of the public. These are skills to be used only when higher care is not available and is designed to help you treat your family.

LAND NAVIGATION St. George, UT FEB 6 Pine Barrens, NJ May 19

Students will learn how to navigate using a map and compass. This decidedly low-tech approach will teach the skills necessary to survive as a Scout without the latest technology.
Students will learn how to follow an azimuth, locate their position, and plan a route. In addition, students will learn survival navigation that will allow them to follow an azimuth without a compass. It is surprising how few people actually know these basic yet invaluable, potentially life-saving outdoor skills.
