Fundamentals of Digital Photography Workshops
by James Cowlin

It seems like everyone has a digital camera or smart phone with them all the time. Judging by the millions of photos that are uploaded to Instagam and Facebook every day, all those cameras are being put to good use. But how many of you are going beyond the auto setting and producing images that not only capture a scene but convey the excitement you felt at the time you clicked the button? With a little bit of guidance, I guarantee you will make better pictures when you take control of your camera.

That idea inspired me to create a series of workshops each of which will focus on one aspect of digital photography and is designed to provide a basic understanding of the skills presented. Classroom instruction will be combined with practical exercises to reinforce the principles of digital photography.

The Fundamentals Workshops are suitable for photographers at all levels. Beginning photographers will gain a solid foundation for taking control of their digital camera and all of its functions. More advanced photographers will benefit from a review of the basics so they can move their photography to the next level. The small size of the workshops will allow me to tailor the instruction to each of the individual participants.

The workshops will be held in my studio in Oracle, Arizona, a small mountain town north of Tucson. If you are coming from out of the area, there are a number of Bed & Breakfast Inns that provide wonderful accommodations for an overnight stay and a chance to explore the area. For more information about Oracle, visit the Oracle Community Guide online.

An understanding of proper exposure and how to achieve it is the foundation of photography. With auto everything settings on modern cameras it is easy to set and forget. However to move your photography to the next level, you need to take control of the quality and quantity of light that reaches the sensor in your camera.

Advances in digital photography hardware and software have made panoramic photographs relatively easy to accomplish. If you have given panoramic photography a try and been disappointed with the results, then this is the workshop for you. If you've never tried to make a panorama, then this workshop will get you started in the right direction.

Fundamentals of Digital Panoramic Photography is a one-day workshop combining a classroom session in the morning with exercises to reinforce the lessons in the afternoon. The workshop will conclude with a review of participants photographs.

Art Workshops
by Barbara Kemp Cowlin

Barbara Kemp Cowlin I teach art workshops for people with a range of experience in the arts-from no experience at all to advanced levels. My specialty area is teaching acrylic painting, but I also love to teach drawing, composition & design, bookmaking, printmaking and various crafts.

Helping people to enjoy being creative in a relaxed atmosphere is very satisfying to me. Teaching students new ways of looking at the world and translating those observations onto a two-dimensional surface whether it's in realistic or abstract form is rewarding for both participants and for me.
