Guided Tour of Grand Canyon North Rim, Zion & Bryce Canyon
by James Cowlin

One of the items on the first business plan for the US Route 89 project was guided tours. It was in the someday/maybe category that nestled in the back of my mind. Twelve years later "someday" has arrived. We have scheduled a bus tour for this coming September to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks.

The tour is a partnership between the US Route 89 Appreciation Society and the Friends of the SaddleBrooke Libraries. SaddleBrooke is an active adult community north of Tucson near our home in Oracle. I handle the planning and logistics for the tour, FSL handles the business aspects. Part of the proceeds goes to fund the three libraries in this community of approximately 10,000 people.

Registration for the tour is now open to any adults who wish to join us. We will be traveling on a 54-passenger luxury tour bus. All seats are equipped with seat belts and the large windows give everyone a panoramic view of the landscape through which we will be traveling. For your comfort, there is a restroom on the bus and we will allow time for stops at rest areas along the way.

Tour Itinerary

The tour will depart from SaddleBrooke on Tuesday, September 2, and return on Monday, September 8, 2014.
Grand Canyon National Park-Naorth Rim
Brahma Temple and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon from Bright Angel Point.
The first two nights will be spent on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. A full day will be dedicated to learning about the geology, ecology and history of the Grand Canyon with an expert guide from the Grand Canyon Field Institute. The tour will visit several of the spectacular view points on the North Rim where there will be ample time to take pictures and enjoy the view.

Accommodations at the North Rim are in Frontier Cabins and dinner will be in the Grand Canyon Lodge dining room with its panoramic view of the canyon.
Zion National Park
Hikers on the Riverside Walk trail to the Narrows of the Virgin River in Zion National Park
On the third day, the tour will travel to Zion National Park with a stop at Pipe Springs National Monument, a historic Mormon fort guarding a scarce water source in the Arizona Strip.

The beauty of Zion Canyon with its towering rock walls will be the focus of the fourth day. There will be a narrated tour into the canyon in the morning. The afternoon will be open for participants to explore and hike on their own using the free shuttle bus system that runs throughout the park. The shuttles also goes to the nearby town of Springdale. Accommodations are in the historic Zion Lodge with meals in the Red Rock Grill Dining Room.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Afternoon clouds gather over Bryce Canyon as viewed from Rainbow Point
The drive from Zion to Bryce Canyon National Park is short so there will be plenty of time to admire the hoodoos and take a hike below the rim after a guided tour. The hotel is the Lodge at Bryce Canyon with meals in the lodge dining room.

The drive from Bryce to Flagstaff is one of the most beautiful on the Colorado Plateau. The tour will stop in Page for lunch. A special guided hike into colorful Antelope Canyon is the highlight of the day. Little America in Flagstaff is the hotel for the sixth night with dinner in the hotel's Western Gold Restaurant.

The tour will conclude on the seventh day with a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The museum is renowned for its collection of Native American artifacts and the tour will be lead by a knowledgeable docent.

Snacks and drinks will be provided along the way. The tour guides are James and Barbara Cowlin who will provide an informative narration during the course of the tour.

The price of the tour is $1,499 which includes all hotels, dinners and tours. Breakfast and lunch are not included in the tour package price. All accommodations are double occupancy.

To reserve a place on the Grand Canyon-Zion-Bryce tour, email Barry Swartzberg or phone (520) 825-0463. A registration form and itinerary can be downloaded from the Friends of the SaddleBrooke Libraries website. Feel free to email me with your questions.

Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon are the trio of National Parks along US Route 89 on the Colorado Plateau. This tour is a great opportunity to explore the geology, ecology, history and beauty of the plateau. Barbara and I plan to make it a most enjoyable experience.
